As promised by Todd McFarlane, major news has just been revealed for the upcoming Spawn movie. Ahead of the announcement, McFarlane teased that a Spawn movie announcement would be made on Wednesday, and that information has just arrived in the form of an exclusive report from THR. The long-gestating reboot is having its screenplay rewritten from scratch but with some big names in the comic book industry involved. Reportedly, Joker co-writer Scott Silver is teaming up with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Malcolm Spellman, who's also co-writing the upcoming movie Captain America: New World Order, along with rising scribe Matthew Mixom to pen the new Spawn script.

While some new writers are coming on board, Jamie Foxx remains attached to star as the titular antihero. The actor has been on board with McFarlane for many years but has not been willing to walk away from the project, despite its false starts in the past. However, McFarlane also suggests that he might not be directing the new Spawn movie after all, though he had spent a long time planning to do so. This is because he's starting to feel out of his league as a director with such big names in the industry coming into the project.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane rhetorically asked. “The answer is, ‘of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

Crediting Joker as a big influence on ensuring that the Spawn reboot will be similarly R-rated, McFarlane also said of enlisting Silver, “Why not just go for the guy who wrote the movie? It was a complete hail marry. Sometimes timing is everything.”

Spellman also spoke to THR about how it felt to breathe new life into Spawn. While he has plenty to be excited about with his work on an upcoming Marvel movie, Spellman was thrilled to board Spawn as a lifelong fan of the comic book character.

“I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullsh*t, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” Spellman said. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what Spawn is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

Scott Silver co-wrote Joker with director Todd Phillips, and given the immense success of that film, the screenwriter is now among the most notable writers of comic book movies in Hollywood. He is currently co-writing the sequel to Joker alongside Phillips. Meanwhile, Malcolm Spellman also made a big splash with Marvel Studios as the creator of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He is also writing the screenplay for Captain America: New World Order with Winter Soldier writer Dalan Musson. As for Matthew Mixom, this will be his first foray into comic book adaptations, though he previously helmed the music doc Yesterday Was Everything.

The Spawn reboot doesn't have a premiere date just yet, but after so many years in development, the odds of the film finally happening are certainly looking better than ever.
