While the Covid pandemic has thrown a number of movie productions into chaos, leading to delays and rescheduling, there have been some that have been stalled for a lot longer. One such property is the Spawn reboot, which was first announced four years ago but has struggled to move beyond the point of announcing a cast. With no new updates for quite some time, fans will take anything from Blumhouse as to where the revived franchise is currently. So when Jason Blum provided one, it is frustrating to discover that is doesn't really tell us anything new about the production.

Speaking to ComicBook, Jason Blum gave a very short update which was, "Oh, yeah, we're going to make it. We're going to make it. It takes a while to get the script right, but we'll make it." Talk about keeping your cards close to your chest.

Fans have been constantly frustrated by the snail's pace of the production, but creator Todd McFarlane said in an earlier interview that he has been feeling the same. "It's the same sort of frustration. I keep saying the same thing, and at some point I'm sure it falls on deaf ears, but we just added another person. Movement is happening....As a collective team we are doing what needs to be done to keep this moving. We put a little bit of pressure on ourselves to say, 'Can we have by midyear something really big and tangible to go public with?' Which is not only to backtrack on the people we've added, but to also say, 'And we sold it to a studio.' Something that's really tangible."

The last major update on the movie was the announcement that Jamie Foxx would be taking on the lead role. Foxx being no stranger to comic book movies having already appeared in one Spider-Man film and about to reprise his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor seemed pretty enthused by the whole thing when he spoke to Yahoo just after the casting was revealed. "I surprised Todd McFarlane. I said, 'Bro, I know that one day you will do this movie, and I hope you will keep me in mind,'" Foxx said. "What Black Panther did was let us know that it's so necessary, and it's the time," Foxx explained. "And Spawn is just an interesting character in itself. The heads that are being put together to bring you something special - look out."

The only other name currently known to be attached to the project is another Marvel veteran, Jeremy Renner, who is set to play Detective Twitch Williams. Renner is currently filming the Hawkeye series for Disney+, and likely has other Marvel related content to come considering he has shown up in many MCU entries since his first appearance back in Thor.

As for the movie plot, McFarlane, who would be writing and directing, has said that to keep within Blumhouse's budget constraints Spawn would not be the main focus for much of the movie, with Renner's Twitch being the lead character and the story aiming to tell the human part of the story ahead of anything else. With other "adult" comic book movies such as Joker and Marvel's Deadpool doing big business for their respective studios, now seems like the best time for Spawn to be rebooted and hopefully before long we might actually get a conclusive answer from those involved as to when that will actually happen. This comes to us from comicbook.
