Spider-Man: No Way Home star Tom Holland has not yet signed on the dotted line to reprise the Marvel role for a fourth outing, though Sony is reportedly eager to get the wheels in motion on a sequel. According to a report by notable insider Jeff Sneider and his publication The Ankler, while nothing official has yet come to pass, Spider-Man 4 remains a “top priority” for the studio.

"Okay, so Sony may not have the biggest bench in terms of franchises, but it wisely made a deal with Marvel Studios to get its marquee character Spider-Man into the MCU, which helped make the studio's solo Spidey movies must-sees, even more so. And while plans are in motion for another Spidey trilogy starring Tom Holland, I don't believe he has actually signed a deal yet, so those plans remain unofficial for now. That said, I'm sure that more Spidey adventures with Holland are a top priority for Rothman & Co., which is also counting on him as the anchor of its budding Uncharted franchise as well."

Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw the multiverse collapse on the MCU and re-introduced several familiar faces to the franchise including both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man variants, has been a huge success for Sony since its release last year. The Marvel sequel received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and has since grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2021, the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time, and the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie ever, all while setting several box office records along the way.

So, it should come as little surprise to learn that Sony wants to make more Spider-Man movies. If anything, it’s a wonder why it’s taking them so long to make Spider-Man 4 official.

While nothing has been officially revealed or announced, previous reports have stated that Sony is looking to reunite stars Tom Holland and Zendaya with director Jon Watts for Spider-Man 4. Sony chairman Tom Rothman recently provided a promising update on the development of the sequel, teasing the upcoming projects that they have in mind. “Uncharted, Jumanji, Spider-Man. We have our Marvel business, which breaks into three tranches,” Rothman said. “There are the Spider-Man movies, and we’re currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar-winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller. We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie.”

The final moments of Spider-Man: No Way Home finds everyone forgetting that Peter Parker and Spider-Man are one and the same, thanks to some sorcery from Doctor Strange. Now that everyone has forgotten Peter’s secret, as well as Peter himself, the teenager is left all alone in the world, and in a much more similar position to the Peter Parker from the pages of Marvel Comics. Peter makes his own suit, a vibrant red and blue number, and swings into the unknown, allowing Spider-Man 4 to start with a blank slate and go in any direction it wants to.
