The first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now considered by many to be the pinnacle of silver screen outings for the Marvel web-slinger, and writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are hoping to match this same success with the upcoming sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). In an interview with IndieWire, the screenwriters and producers are confident that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will push the envelope even further than that first adventure, with everyone now having the confidence to take Miles to realms unknown.

"It's been fun to have the confidence. And to go even harder and push the medium even further and take Miles [Morales] to places you couldn't imagine."

While much of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) remains a mystery, a recently revealed synopsis does offer some clues as to what kind of multiversal madness Miles Morales will get himself into. "Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered," the description reads.

Released in 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced audiences to Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, an alternate version of Spider-Man. Following Miles as he gradually becomes the new Spider-Man, he must join several other Spider-People from various parallel universes to save his universe from Kingpin. The movie was universally praised, going on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, something which Phil, Lord, and everyone else involved will no doubt hope to do again.

If the recent trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is anything to go by, the Academy will surely come calling all over again, with the footage teasing the vibrant visual prowess that will be on display. Producing pair Lord and Miller have previously explained the approach to Miles’ exploration of the multiverse, and they couldn't help but be justifiably boastful. "Well we're just getting started. In the first look you get just a taste of what we're going for," they said. "Every dimension looks and feels radically different from all the others. They all look like they were drawn by a different artist."

In fact, this is far from the first time that Lord and Miller have expressed their desire to expand on the foundations laid in the first Spider-Verse, with the pair adding, "It's an opportunity to build on that visual foundation and push it to bold new places. Some of the groundbreaking art techniques the team has developed for this movie have blown us away. It's going to be an exciting experience for audiences like nothing anyone's seen."

Produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is set to be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by David Callaham, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2022.
