Sony Pictures has revealed several intriguing details regarding their upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at The Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The studio has finally started to slowly untangle the web of mysteries surrounding the highly anticipated sequel, with new footage (which sadly has not yet been released online) and information offering a better idea of what we can expect from Miles Morales’ next adventure.
According to Sony Animation, it sounds like Miles will have a lot going on without being dragged back into the madness of the multiverse. The rookie wall-crawler will undergo the classic struggle between his ordinary identity and his superhero duties and has even gotten himself a new suit for the sequel. He’s not alone in his struggles, as fellow Spider-Person Gwen Stacy also has a lot to contend with balancing her real life with her superhero identity.
But, while she may have a hard life similar to Miles, her universe is a beautiful place to deal with such hardships, as footage from the festival gave audience members their first look at Earth-65 and the changes in animation that will occur as we travel from universe to universe.
Finally, we have a little more information on the villain of the piece. Rumors began to swirl some time ago that lesser-known Spider-Man bad guy, The Spot, would be the one to terrorize Miles and his friends, and this has turned out to be absolutely true. Voiced by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Rushmore star Jason Schwartzman, The Spot AKA Jonathan Ohnn gains the ability to create portals between universes. Much like the comics, the Across the Spider-Verse version of The Spot will continue to live up to his name, with portals in the form of black dots appearing all over his body.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Was Recently Delayed Until 2023
Audiences had hoped to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse this year, with the movie given a released date of April 2022. Sadly, due to the relentless stresses caused by the real world, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has now been delayed, with audiences forced to wait until 2023 before re-entering the Spider-Verse with Miles Morales and co.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) return for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, in an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will once again bring various other Spider-People along for the ride, including Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy AKA Spider-Gwen, a super-heroine from another dimension and Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker AKA Spider-Man, an older version of the web-slinger. The sequel will also introduce Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara AKA Spider-Man 2099 and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman. Additionally, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Rachel Dratch, Shea Whigham, and Jorma Taccone will also star.
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 2, 2023, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to be released in March 2024.
