Spider-Man has always provided Sony and Marvel with their some of their biggest and most consistent hits. AfterSpider-Man: No Way Home broke records for the MCU’s live-action Spider-Man outings, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been casting its web over audiences this weekend. The film is breaking records on the animated front with Miles Morales’ new outing in the multiverse posting the third-highest opening day ever for an animated movie, taking $69.1 million on Friday in the U.S. alone. That has seen projections estimating the film will take up to $150 million at the box office over the weekend, tripling the opening of its predecessor and making it the biggest animated movie opening in Sony’s history.
While Spider-Man is always a huge pull in any form, the biggest reason for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’s success seems to be coming from the hype that has not only built in the lead up to the release but continued over its first days in cinemas. The movie has become one of the rarest of releases, having managed to gain almost unanimous positive reviews from both critics and audiences, holding respective 95% and 97% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Of course, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a reasonable hit and it seems that unlike many Spider-Man related movies that Sony have put out recently such as Morbius and to some extent Venom: Let There Be Carnage, they have managed to actually build something that everyone wants to see and no one has anything negative to say about once they do.
Will Miles Morales Make it Into the Live-Action MCU and Will Shameik Moore Play Him?
Marvel fans have come to expect the unexpected with the MCU, and while James Gunn has made it clear that the DCU will be having a uniform policy of the same actor playing their characters in all iterations and mediums. Marvel have had no such rule so far, and while some of the regular stars of the franchise have voices animated versions in Marvel’s What If…?, the question of whether Shameik Moore will be making the opposite journey to play Morales in a live-action interpretation is something that is yet to be confirmed. However, with it being confirmed that a live-action Miles Morales movie is in the works, the actor would certainly be happy to take on the new challenge. He said previously:
“I guess you would get more than the voice if I was to play it. I would get in shape, take the time to really slim, slim, slim up. Shave this beard. Go into afro-mode, take out the braids. And I would just put my entire being into that performance.”
Currently, Shameik will be returning to voice Miles Morales again in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is currently expected to be released in 2024. Tom Holland is gearing up to play the MCU’s Spider-Man again in a fourth movie, which is currently on hold due to the writer’s strike, and the Miles Morales live-action movie is probably in the same status.
