The first trailer for Sony’s upcoming sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has finally dropped, and with it comes a synopsis teasing the continuing adventures of Miles Morales’ as the web-slinger. As demonstrated in the newly released footage, Miles will be thrown once again into the madness of the multiverse, with the official logline revealing that he will team up with all manner of new “Spider-People” in order to take down the currently very mysterious villain.

"Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered."

Exactly which Spider-Persons will be brought into the fray is largely unknown at this time, though we have been privy to some information, which has revealed that Takuya Yamashiro, the "Japanese Spider-Man" from the 1978 Spider-Man series, will appear in the movie alongside Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman, played by Issa Rae. The trailer has also confirmed the return of both Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy and Miguel O'Hara AKA Spider-Man 2099, who appeared briefly in a post-credits sequence at the end of the first Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, voiced by Oscar Isaac. No doubt there are still many more Spider-People yet to be revealed.

Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have previously teased countless other Spider-Variants factoring into the highly anticipated sequel. "I think there's a bunch [of possible characters], and I don't want to say too much because there's a wide breadth of characters that are coming out of the Spider-Man universes now." Miller explained. "And it's really fun to be able to sort of think about plucking ones that you haven't seen before or have something interesting thematic to say."

As for the villain, this currently remains even more mysterious than which alternate Spider-Men-and-Women will appear, with a recent rumor claiming that it will be the obscure Spider-Man and Daredevil villain, The Spot, who will torment Miles Morales across the Spider-Verse. A lesser-known Marvel bad guy, this particular villain has the ability to access and manipulate interdimensional portals which become adhered to his skin as a result the typical comic book lab accident. Harnessing such a power proves to be useful in battle, as The Spot is able to transport himself or any part of his body, though he often just uses the portals, or spots, to make his superhero foes punch themselves in the face. While the involvement of The Spot is far from confirmed, the character's power set and unfamiliarity would certainly fit the Spider-Verse mold perfectly.

Produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is set to be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by David Callaham, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2022, having been delayed from an initial April 2022 date due to the ongoing global situation. The synopsis was released alongside the trailer by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
