Miles Morales will do battle with The Spot in Sony’s upcoming animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The Z-list villain was revealed to be the main antagonist of the Spider-Verse follow-up courtesy of the movie’s official Twitter account, with a piece of promotional art offering our first look at The Spot in action.

Moonrise Kingdom and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star Jason Schwartzman will provide the voice of Jonathan Ohnn AKA The Spot, with the artwork coming alongside the caption, “Meet The Spot, Miles Morales's most formidable foe yet. Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, see him in action in Spider-Man: Across the #SpiderVerse, exclusively in movie theaters June 2, 2023.” Rumors surrounding the involvement of The Spot as the movie’s villain began to spread last year and it turns out, this time at least, that the rumors were indeed true.

Alongside Schwartzman, two more additions to the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cast have also been made, with The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone joining the animated sequel as Adrian Toomes AKA The Vulture, while Joker and Kong: Skull Island star Shea Whigham joins as George Stacy, the father of Gwen.

For those not familiar with The Spot, this particular member of Marvel's rogue's gallery was created for Marvel Comics by Al Milgrom and Herb Trimpe and has the ability to access and manipulate interdimensional portals which become adhered to his skin as a result of another classic comic book lab accident. Why anyone would still be willing to work in a lab in the Marvel world truly is a mystery. Nevertheless, work in the lab Dr. Jonathan Ohnn does, and it results in him being able to harness the power of space warps.

Harnessing such a power proves to be useful in battle, as The Spot is able to transport himself or any part of his body across unlimited distances. Though he often just uses the portals, or spots, to make his superhero foes punch themselves, or their allies, in the face – as is perfectly demonstrated in the background of the new artwork. Poor Gwen.

Following the introduction of alternate Spider-Man in 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will see Miles Morales return for the next chapter in the animated franchise. Once again dragged into the multiverse, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is transported to all manner of different universes as he joins forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by David Callaham, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. The sequel stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales AKA Spider-Man, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O'Hara AKA Spider-Man 2099, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy AKA Spider-Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman.

Following a recent delay, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 2, 2023. A further sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released in March 2024.
