Spider-Man: Far from Home is currently in theaters and dominating the box office for a second weekend in a row. With that being said, fans have been going back to see the highly anticipated sequel for a second time and noticing new things, including a pretty slick Mysterio Easter Egg. While hunting for the hidden things is often fun, some official high quality VFX images from a specific scene have been made available and they show how Marvel Zombies inspired said particular scene. There are SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Far From Home below, so read ahead at your own risk.
Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio is obviously the villain in the movie as he uses his cutting edge hologram technology to bring the Elementals to "life." Marvel Studios and Sony did a pretty good job of keeping his true motives a secret. He ends up being able to play some horrible mind games on Peter Parker through the use of his technology. And in one particular scene, which may go down as one of the best in Marvel Cinematic Universe history, Mysterio cranks up the pain and starts to play with Parker's emotions as a zombie version of Iron Man rises from the grave with black widow spiders crawling all over him.
The terrifying shot, which took many MCU fans by surprise, is an homage to the Marvel Zombies comic series created by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. Marvel Zombies is a five-issue limited series published from December 2005 to April 2006. Marvel Comics has just announced that the series will return, but little to no details were revealed about how and when. They did tease a cover by artist Inhyuk Lee of zombified versions of Captain America, Deadpool, and Wolverine.
Showing a zombified version of Iron Man rise from the grave was hard for Peter Parker to see, but it was also hard for MCU fans watching Spider-Man: Far From Home. Tony Stark died at the end of Avengers: Endgame and some fans aren't over watching the beloved hero sacrifice his life to save the universe. So, seeing the zombie come out of the ground was a bit too much for some fans, which is understandable. Stark has only been dead in the public's eye since the end of April.
With that being said there are more than likely a lot of Marvel Comics fans who were beyond excited to see a nod to Marvel Zombies in Spider-Man: Far From Home. In addition to the zombie version of Iron Man, the VFX stills breakdown a lot of the trippy scene. People thought Doctor Strange brought some pretty crazy psychedelic-like experiences to the MCU, but Mysterio makes all of that look like a decent dream.
