Disney+ Day has brought tons of surprising updates regarding to the streaming platform. With many new updates pertaining to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Disney and Marvel Studios did not hold back during today's celebration. Both studios have announced a brand-new animated series titled Spider-Man: Freshman Year. The series is expected to follow Peter Parker's early years before becoming the web slinger we all know today. No other details pertaining to the upcoming series has been revealed at this time, but you can check the official logo that was just released earlier today.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year

As of right now, it is currently unclear whether Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spider-Man, or if the lead role will be voiced by Hudson Thames, who voiced the character in the first season of Marvel's What If...?. The announcement of Spider-Man: Freshman Year arrives just a little over a month away from the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The highly-anticipated live-action film will star Tom Holland's Peter Parker alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, J.B. Smoove as Julius Dell, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, Angourie Rice as Betty Brant, Hannibal Buress as Coach Wilson, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus. Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently scheduled for release on December 16, 2021.

The official synopsis for Spider-Man: Freshman Year reads as, "the animated series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character's early comic book roots." The only name currently attached to the upcoming project is Jeff Trammel, who will serve as a executive producer, and head writer for the animated series. The official announcement of Spider-Man: Freshman Year was made on Disney+ Day, which is the two-year anniversary celebration of the House of Mouse's streaming service. Marvel has had a strong presence so far during the festivities, also announcing the new animated series X-Men '97 and Marvel Zombies. It also debuted brand new logos for She-Hulk, Ironheart, Echo, Secret Invasion, and Agatha: House of Harkness.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year, X-Men '97 and Marvel Zombies all follow Marvel's What If...?, the studio's first foray into the animation realm. Marvel's heavyweight, Victoria Alonso, is currently heading a mini-studio within Marvel that is primarily focusing on animated projects. One of those projects would have been a spinoff of Marvel's What If...? which would follow Star-Lord T'Challa. Unfortunately, that project was scrapped due to the passing of Chadwick Boseman last year.

While fans will have to wait for the more details pertaining to Spider-Man: Freshman Year, Peter Parker/Spider-Man will be returning to the big screen in Spider-Man: No Way Home next month. Spider-Man: Freshman Year will serve as a prequel to Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The upcoming series will be the 25th television series, and the third animated series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Produced by Marvel Studios, the series will also be an installment of the MCU's phase four.
