Matt Damon recently played a fictional version of Loki in a hilarious scene from Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, but it has been reported that the actor has no interest in playing the main villain role in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Damon has previously said that he'd like to play a version of Daredevil if it were directed by Christopher Nolan, but that's not ever going to happen. Plus, how would his good friend Ben Affleck feel about him poaching a role that once belonged to him?

We'll throw this in the rumor pile for now, but there was no reasoning behind Matt Damon's decision not to play the main villain role in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. Additionally, there's no confirmation that the actor was even approached for the role, so we'll take this one on the chin for the time being. However, casting is underway, so that bit of the story fits the timeline. As for the main villain that will appear in the Homecoming sequel, that's really anybody's guess at the moment, but it won't reportedly be Matt Damon.

It should be noted that when Spider-Man: Homecoming was announced, Michael Keaton was heavily rumored to be playing Vulture. But, there were reports that he too had passed on the role and we all know how that played out. Keaton ended up playing an excellent Vulture opposite Tom Holland's Spider-Man. So, Matt Damon really isn't too far of a stretch, especially considering that Sony and Marvel reportedly want to bring in a heavyweight to play the next big villain. Again, this is speculation at this time and nothing has been officially confirmed.

Before talk of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, Tom Holland revealed that they were already discussing the main villain for the sequel. The first film goes out of its way to set up Scorpion as played by Michael Mando. But, it doesn't really seem plausible that Sony and Marvel would go with Scorpion to be the main villain in the sequel, though chances are pretty good that he'll have some kind of part to play when the time comes. Since casting is underway, it's only a matter of time before some official news comes down the wire in regard to the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.

While it seems that Matt Damon may have passed on the main villain role in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, it could be a clue into who the big bad could be. Could we see Sandman, Electro, or Norman Osborne? Again, it's too early to tell, but those could be pretty good characters for Damon to play. Spider-Man: Home Coming 2 will hit theaters on July 5th, 2019, just a few months after the release of the still untitled Avengers 3.
