Fans of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man became very excited very quickly earlier today when producer Amy Pascal revealed that plans were in place to continue making movies with Marvel Studios and a new trilogy of films was on the way. However, almost immediately, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Sony insiders believe that this announcement was perhaps a bit premature as there are currently no plans agreed or being discussed for a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies as seemed to be suggested by Pascal when speaking to Fandango.

As Spider-Man: No Way Home tickets went on advance sale and caused numerous cinema sites to crash under the pressure of thousands of fans eager to secure a seat in the opening showings of the movie when it arrives later in December. On the back of this, Fandango published an interview with Pascal in which she was quoted as laying out the future of Tom Holland’s web-slinger in no uncertain terms. The interview piece read:

“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”

Following a note from Sony insiders that while there is “a strong relationship between Holland and Feige”, and all parties seem to want to continue the collaboration in future but it looks like fans just need to let these things pan out in their own time as it certainly doesn’t seem likely that we will be heading into new Spider-Man territory in the relatively near future and lot of planning will be needed before any of that comes to fruition if it does.

Sony have been in control of the rights to Spider-Man for some time now, and unlike many other Marvel characters who have found their way back under the Marvel Studios banner in one way or another, Spider-Man is going to be one that doesn’t find his way home unless Disney ever manage to take over Sony Pictures. Instead, what we have is a potentially volatile relationship that is both lucrative for both parties to continue, but could also lead to any number of other stumbling blocks in future.

Currently Marvel Studios are heading into a wildly branching multiverse following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and with over 30 projects already in the works over the next few years, that would mean it would be four to five years before a new Spider-Man project would even be on the cards, by which time Tom Holland would be considerably older than he is now. In comparison, Sony are rapidly growing their own Marvel Universe of Spider-Man characters, with this year’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage being followed by Morbius early next year and a Kraven The Hunter movie heading into production. Clearly from the ending of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, a crossover with Spider-Man is coming, and Andy Serkis, who directed the Venom sequel, has also suggested that Spider-Man will meet Venom at some point but not for a while. With so much hanging in the air, we will likely see some clarity come to this in time.
