The newest poster for Marvel sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home offers our best look yet at Willem Dafoe’s return as the supervillain Green Goblin, and more specifically the costume change he will undergo when he enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the character’s comeback has been spotted in other promo material, he has always been wearing the more familiar armored suit, whereas in this latest sighting he is clearly wearing something far more low-tech.

Following the most recent trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, there had been some speculation that several variant Green Goblins would make their way into the MCU. Many had theorized that either James Franco or Dane DeHaan’s versions of Harry Osbourne, both of whom were transformed into the Green Goblin in their respective franchises, would make an appearance, but thanks to the newest poster, we now know this is not the case. Instead, Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osbourne will lose the Power Rangers-esque outfit, swapping it for something slightly more familiar to comic book fans. While far from being comic book accurate, the hood and general appearance of the costume at least look a little more akin to the character’s usual attire than they did before.

Spider-Man fans cannot wait for Willem Dafoe’s return, with the actor sure to provide much terror in both of Green Goblin’s guises. In fact, the actor has already begun, scaring Tom Holland while on the set of the Marvel movie. "It's actually a funny story when I met Willem for the first time. Obviously, at that time, all of the villains in the film, it was a huge secret that they were in the film. So they would walk around set with these cloaks on. Naturally, these guys were very excited to be coming back and bringing these roles back to life," Holland explained. "I just sort of bumped into this guy in a cloak. I was like, 'Watch out, mate.' He took his cloak off, and I almost got really scared — Oh shit, the Goblin's here."

The Green Goblin will not be the only one going through a costume change in Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus sporting upgraded tentacles, while Jamie Foxx’s Electro goes through major changes to transform him from the blue-skinned Dr. Manhattan rip-off to a much more comic accurate depiction of the infamous supervillain.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will pick up with the Marvel hero following Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man being exposed by Mysterio at the end of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Thanks to this, his life and reputation have been turned upside down, and thus Parker decides to ask his friend and colleague Dr. Stephen Strange to help restore his secret identity with magic. Parker’s inability to stop talking during the spell causes things to go horribly awry and breaks open the multiverse, allowing supervillains from alternate realities who have previously fought a Spider-Man to arrive.

Starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, Benedict Wong, Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans, Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 17, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. This observation comes to us from Culture Crave.
