SPOILERS for the Spider-Man: No Way Home ending to follow...

Latest Marvel outing Spider-Man: No Way Home is packed to the brim with surprises, with one coming at the very end, as Tom Holland’s Peter Parker finds himself broke, alone, and in a situation that will be a lot more familiar to fans of the comics. In an interview with The Wrap, writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have discussed bringing this particular Spider-Man era to an end, and essentially transforming the trilogy into a three-movie arc origin story.

"If it ends here, great. If this is the end of this, if this is all about, 'Oh, this was all ...' If you look backward and go, 'This was an origin story that took place over three stories to get this Peter Parker to this place where he's stripped-down, anonymous, has no billionaire benefactor, has been through the sacrifice of what it really means to have this power and what that responsibility that goes along with that is, and is now having to look for how to pay rent.' I think that would be really satisfying, I think that'd be really cool."

McKenna also discussed his and Sommers’ approach to this iteration of Spider-Man, admitting that they never necessarily intended to bring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker to this point, a point that is much more reminiscent of the source material, and instead just let it happen organically. "I think we're always trying to tell an organic story with Tom Holland's Peter Parker, knowing that we can't be reliant on anything else other than he's got to go his own way at the end of this movie, each movie, and not be reliant on something that we … God knows, I think it's been incredible, we've been a part of this collaboration with Sony and Marvel Studios, and [Spider-Man producers] Amy [Pascal] and Kevin [Feige]. I think we always know that it's total hubris to think, 'Oh, we're going to end with a certain cliffhanger that will require things that we can't depend on,'" McKenna explained.

Spider-Man: No Way Home ends with Peter Parker making his own suit, a vibrant red and blue ensemble that is arguably the most comic accurate costume to ever grace the screen. With no one knowing who he is, the movie allows Spider-Man to finally go it alone in a way that will be much more akin to the comics, and while it is likely that the character will slowly be folded back into the wider MCU, no doubt fans cannot wait to see a somewhat more familiar version of the beloved web-slinger. Perhaps the superhero will now tackle some of the mysterious villains who appeared as silhouettes during the action-packed finale...

Directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, and more, Spider-Man: No Way Home has now been declared the eighth biggest movie of all time.
