While doing press for his new sci-fi action-thriller Edge of Tomorrow, director Doug Liman shared some new details about his upcoming Splinter Cell video game adaptation, which has Tom Hardy attached to star as Sam Fisher. The Ubisoft game centers on Fisher, a black ops agent who neutralizes terrorist threats around the world for a secret government division called Echelon. The director revealed that this new movie will offer an origin story for Sam Fisher and everything related to the game.

"I'm working on the script with Tom Hardy. I think we have a great take on how to make an awesome film out of that. Everything about Splinter Cell will be younger. It's a chance to come up with a new franchise that is fresher and newer and younger, and Tom Hardy is such an incredible actor."

When asked if the movie will include some of the high-tech gadgets Fisher uses such as Multi-Vision goggles, the filmmaker had this to say.

"Some of the tropes of the game will for sure be in the film, but also the fun of that is when you lose them. To strip that stuff away and really make the character have to operate without it."

Tom Hardy revealed in April that he isn't sure when shooting will begin. Principal photography was scheduled to begin in August, but since screenwriter Sheldon Turner stepped in to rewrite the script in March, it isn't known if production will be delayed or not.
