Squid Game Was a Smash Hit on Netflix

Squid Game tells the story of a deadly competition involving 456 players taking part in dangerous versions of children's games for a chance to win immense riches and pay off their various debts. It's a concept Hwang Dong-hyuk had been sitting on since 2009, but production had stalled over the next decade as no potential buyers were interested in producing the series. It was a movement by Netflix in 2019 to include more foreign content that finally led to the streamer giving Dong-hyuk the funds necessary to finally get Squid Game off the ground. It was obviously a wise decision in hindsight with the show winding up and setting the record as the most-watched Netflix series.

While the renewal hadn't been made official up to this point, Dong-hyuk had been teasing his desire to make a new season. However, he has said he didn't want to rush out a new season, instead hoping to take his time with it to craft the right story. It now seems that Dong-hyuk has some ideas in mind for the second reason, given his above teases for who's coming back.

"Of course there is talk," Dong-hyuk said of a second season back in 2021 in an interview with The Guardian. "That's inevitable because it's been such a success. I am considering it. I have a very high-level picture in my mind, but I'm not going to work on it straight away. There's a film I really want to make. I'm thinking about which to do first. I'm going to talk to Netflix."

Squid Game is streaming on Netflix. A release date has not yet been announced for season 2.
