Yesterday, it was widely reported that Anna Kendrick wants to take on the role of Squirrel Girl in an upcoming Marvel movie. What has somewhat flown under the radar is that this is entirely possible, and could happen as soon as Spider-Man: Homecoming hits the big screen next summer. A lot of fans aren't familiar with Squirrel Girl, her powers or the fact that she was once a member of the Great Lakes Avengers. As it so happens, Civil War co-director Joe Russo teased earlier in the year that some, if not all, the Great Lakes Avengers may appear in Homecoming. Today, we have fan art that shows what Anna Kendrick would look like as this unique superhero. And guess what? It could work.

Squirrel Girl was co-created by comic book legend Steve Ditko and Will Murray. She first appeared in the pages of Marvel way back in 1992. Real name Doreen Green, this always happy hero has the super power to communicate with squirrels, and she's gone onto win quite a few title bouts against some of Marvel's biggest and baddest super villains. The charter was actually created during a time when most comic tales were turning dark and tragic. She was an attempt to lighten the mood of that era. And recently, she has had a reemergence as one of the more popular characters, with her own reboot comic The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Anna Kendrick was out promoting her upcoming comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates when the subject of Squirrel Girl came up. Asking any given celebrity who their go-to superhero is has become the hot question at any given junket. But it seems Anna Kendrick came prepared to answer this. And her response was quite unique. She explains why Squirrel Girl has struck such a cord.

"My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don't know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!"

While the character has done well on her own, both in the comics and at the newsstand in terms of sales, she has not been above joining the occasional superhero team. As we mentioned at the top, she was most notably one of the Great Lakes Avengers. The team also featured such heroes as Mr. Immortal, Doorman, Deadpool, and Big Bertha. What is interesting here is that leading up to Civil Wars' debut in theaters this past May, co-director Joe Russo was asked who else besides Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man might show up in Homecoming from the MCU. He gave this response.

"Let's just say ... Great Lakes Avengers."

So, is Squirrel Girl going to make her first ever live-action appearance in Spider-man: Homecoming? It sounds unlikely, but definitely not out of the realm of possibilities. Stranger things have, and will continue to happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Who knows what the future holds for Squirrel Girl or if there is a place for Anna Kendrick in the MCU. Fan art extraordinaire Boss Logic took it upon himself to create the fan art you see below, which depicts Kendrick as Squirrel Girl. If this were to actually happen, it sure looks like it would be a lot of fun.
