Star Trek Beyond, the third chapter in Paramount's rebooted Star Trek series, is continuing to shoot in Vancouver under the direction of Justin Lin. We got an early look at the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise as it sets forth on its 5 year mission in a series of Omaze videos. They didn't really show us anything substantial from the production. That changes today. Now, we actually get to see some of the cast in their official new Star Fleet uniforms. This latest set video, which arrives courtesy of Screen Crush, also has our first look at new cast member Sofia Boutella.
The Star Trek Beyond crew were shooting an outdoor scene that finds Sofia Boutella's as yet-unnamed alien crawling out of a hatch. She has white skin and unique black markings on her face. She is soon joined by Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, who has a completely new uniform on different from anything we've seen in the franchise. It's unclear what is happening in this scene. But these two are soon joined by Simon Pegg's Scotty and Anton Yelchin's Chekov, both of whom are also wearing new Star Fleet threads. While we can't hear any of the dialogue, Simon Pegg engages in some old fashioned silent movie baffonary, and all seem to be having a good time.
At this point, judging from her appearance in the video, Sofia Boutella is playing an alien species new to the FR5gLqr2kzo17e|Star Trek franchise. Her unique look does bring to mind the Nibiran people seen in Star Trek Into Darkness. The Nibirians were a primitive species that were around before the warp. They became the collective victims of a massive Prime Directive violation played out by Captain Kirk as seen in the 2009 J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek.
While the new uniforms seen here don't look quite like anything we've seen before, they do recall the designs used in both Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5. In late June, director Justin Lin tweeted out a Delta logo patch photo, and that seems to be utilized here, on these duty jackets. Star Trek Beyond also features the return of Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and John Cho as Sulu. Idris Elba is playing an unidentified character, rumored to be the new villain. Though, that doesn't explain his appearance aboard the Enterprise during the Omaze videos. Joe Taslim has also joined the cast in an unspecified role.
J.J. Abrams, who directed the first reboot and its sequel, is back as a producer this time out. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung wrote the script, though no firm story details have been revealed at this time. It is believed that Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew are in deep space, working through their 5 year mission to boldly go where no one has gone before. Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 8 of next year, exactly two months before Star Trek celebrates its 50th Anniversary. Take a look at the video.
