We /roberto-orci-in-talks-to-direct-star-trek-3/reported that director Roberto Orci was in talks to join Paramount and Skydance's upcoming sci-fi sequel Star Trek 3 last week. Yesterday, Variety received confirmation that he will indeed be replacing J.J. Abrams in the director's seat.

Plot details are being held under wraps, but Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are expected to return. Roberto Orci co-wrote both of the previous films and is currently writing this next installment with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Roberto Orci and his writing partner Alex Kurtzman co-wrote Transformers, Mission: Impossible III, Cowboys & Aliens and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The pair recently parted ways.

J.J. Abrams is producing with his partner Bryan Burke and Skydance's David Ellison. No production or official release date has been released.
