It sounds like Paramount has completely thrown out former director Roberto Orci's Star Trek 3 script, which he wrote alongside J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Now Simon Pegg, who plays Enterprise engineer Scotty, will be penning the screenplay alongside Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue.

Justin Lin, who is credited with rejuvenating the Fast & Furious franchise, is confirmed to direct. This latest report also confirms that Simon Pegg will return as Scotty. Doug Jung previously wrote the film Diamond for Bad Robot and Paramount, which is how he landed the job. The writing duo are just getting underway. No details have been released yet, but it sounds like Roberto Orci's time travel plot has been discarded.

Simon Pegg is not only an actor, he also co-wrote the Cornetto trilogy alongside director Edgar Wright, which includes Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. It was previously reported that William Shatner would be appearing as Old Kirk alongside Chris Pine's younger version of the character. That was back when Roberto Orci was in control of the ship. It isn't known if this element will be retained by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.
