They saved the best for last, obviously! After last week brought tons of new Star Trek Beyond images and footage, the fun continues into this week with the final two character posters. Paramount Pictures has been celebrating the franchise's 75th Anniversary. Right before the Memorial Day weekend, the studio debuted the second trailer for their highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, which hits theaters nationwide July 22. They then proceeded to slowly release various character posters, including Sofia Boutella's Jaylah, Karl Urban's Bones, Zachary Quinto's Mr. Spock, Anton Yelchin's Chekov, Simon Pegg's Scotty, John Cho's Sulu and Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Today, we get the last two main characters, with Chris Pine once again taking the Captain's Chair as James T. Kirk and Idris Elba as the main villain Krull.
Star Trek Beyond, the highly anticipated next installment in Paramount's globally popular Star Trek series, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In Star Trek 3, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. The movie comes as the franchise celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the original Star Trek series, which debuted in the fall of 1966.
It has been confirmed that Star Trek Beyond will be set during the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission to explore new worlds. 2009's Star Trek took in $257.7 million at the domestic box office and $385.6 million worldwide, with the 2013 follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness taking in $228.7 million domestically and $467.3 million worldwide. We'll have to wait and see if Star Trek Beyond can out-gross its predecessors this summer. It certainly won't be an easy task, though since this sci-fi thriller will have plenty of competition in mid-July.
Star Trek Beyond will be going up against Warner Bros.' thriller Lights Out and 20th Century Fox's animated sequel Ice Age: Collision Course in theaters on July 22. It will also be sandwiched between two more highly-anticipated movies, Sony's Ghostbusters on July 15 and Universal's Jason Bourne on July 29. It's too early to tell how well these movies will fare at the box office, but the anticipation for Star Trek Beyond only seems to be getting bigger and bigger, after the release of the new trailer last week.
