Suppose you're a Star Trek: Discovery fan. In that case, you're already familiar with the feline in question: Queen Grudge, the Maine Coon who lives with Cleveland "Book" Booker (David Ajala) aboard his unique spacecraft. However, we've now learned an essential detail about the standards Grudge holds for her food: she snubs pet food from the replicator and only eats the "finest fresh ingredients!"

The writers revealed the detail in the first issue of the Star Trek: Discovery: Adventures in the 32nd Century comic published by IDW, which shined a spotlight on Queen Grudge—written by Mike Johnson, with art by Angel Hernandez, coloring by JD Mettler, and lettering by Neil Uyetake. With a main cover by Hernandez and Mettler and a retailer incentive cover by Aaron Harvey, the comic filled in some backstories on everyone's favorite Star Trek feline. Well, everyone's favorite in the non-Spot category, although Spot wasn't too snobby for replicator food. Of course, Spot wasn't a Queen.

Queen Grudge herself, played on Discovery by feline brothers Leeu and Durban, narrates Adventures in the 32nd Century #1. Over the course of the issue, we learn that Grudge refuses to eat "replicator mush"; instead, she enjoys the fresh ingredients "sourced" by her loyal human, Book. We also learned more about her initial animosity towards the human who threatens to steal Book's attention away, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) of the U.S.S. Discovery.

The Adventures of Grudge

The comic follows the adventures Grudge has experienced throughout the third season of the series, including the point at which Book's ship was "swallowed up" by Discovery. This leads to some of the best Star Trek comic book panels in existence, which catalogs Grudge's interactions with the various members of the crew, including Book's season 4 "temporary detainment" partner, Jett Reno, played on the show by Tig Notaro.

Plus, we learn another detail about Grudge by the comic's conclusion: she hates traveling via the mycelium network! In a hilarious sequence depicting Grudge's first experience traveling by spore-drive, we see the feline throw up her locally-sourced dinner right in front of Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts). In addition to all this, the comic also reveals which member of Discovery's crew quickly earns Grudge's respect, and it may not be the member of the crew fans' first suspect! Grudge must admit that the human aboard Discovery who most quickly earned her respect is the spore drive operator Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) due to his entitlement, dismissiveness, and territorial nature.

The final panel of the issue takes us where no fan has gone before: into the mind of Grudge! The story's conclusion may not reveal what androids dream about, but it does show us Queen Grudge's dreams, and they're every bit as glorious as Trekkies might imagine. Give us a follow-up comic about Captain Grudge, please! Each issue of Adventures in the 32nd Century will focus on a different supporting cast member on Discovery. Next month, IDW is publishing a story about Adira (Blu del Barrio) and their boyfriend Gray (Ian Alexander), and subsequent issues will reveal more about both Detmer and Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson).
