Last month, it was revealed that the new Star Trek TV series will be called Star Trek Discovery, created by Bryan Fuller. The show will debut its pilot episode on CBS in January before the rest of the series is available on the new streaming service CBS All Access. Today we have word from series creator Bryan Fuller about why the show is entitled Star Trek Discovery.

Bryan Fuller put in a video appearance at Star Trek Mission New York, where he clarified why the show's new ship is called Discovery. As it turns out, the ship's new title is an homage to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Here's what the showrunner had to say, courtesy of ComicBook.com.

"This ship is called the Discovery for a few reasons. Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick's contribution to the Discovery on 2001: A Space Odyssey, NASA's vessel the Discovery, and also the sense of discovery. [It's about] what the word 'discovery' means to Star Trek audiences who have been promised a future by Gene Roddenberry where we come together as a planet and seek new worlds and new alien races to explore and understand and collaborate with."

The show's title was announced during the 50th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con, which was moderated by Bryan Fuller. The panel honored the golden anniversary and the indelible mark the iconic franchise has left on fans around the world, and featured stars from previous iterations of the beloved series, including William Shatner, Brett Spiner, Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan and Scott Bakula. Bryan Fuller is serving as showrunner and co-writing the pilot script with Alex Kurtzman. The new sci-fi series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers.

The show Star Trek Discovery will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS's current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series. The new Star Trek will introduce never-before-seen characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966. Stay tuned for more on Star Trek Discovery as we get closer to the January debut.
