Star Trek is boldly going to Nickelodeon next year to bring a new animated series to a new generation of fans. As announced during the Comic-Con@Home panel, Star Trek: Prodigy is the official title of the latest animated series in the franchise. The project was originally announced in April 2019, but details, as well as its official name, have remained scarce until now. The official logo for the show was revealed, which we've included for you to check out.

The series is developed by Emmy-Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Ninjago}). Plot details, for the moment, remain scarce. The series will be overseen for Nickelodeon by Ramsey Naito, EVP, Animation Production and Development for the network. The CG-animated series will debut exclusively on Nickelodeon in 2021. The series will be from CBS' Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios' new animation arm; Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers alongside Kevin and Dan Hageman. Aaron Baiers will serve as a co-executive producer.

This is the latest in an ever-expanding lineup of Star Trek shows being produced by CBS. They have had luck in recent years with Star Trek: Discovery and, more recently, Star Trek: Picard, which brought back Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard for the first time in years. Another animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks, is also on the way. Additionally, a spin-off centered on Captain Pike is being developed. These shows are set to exist on CBS All Access, the network's streaming service. That is, in part, what separates Star Trek: Prodigy, as it will be airing on a different network.

For fans of the franchise, this all provides an abundance of options. Star Trek's roots are on the small screen and this new universe represents a return to that. On the movie side, things have been a bit quiet since the release of Star Trek Beyond. Though well-reviewed, the movie was a bit of a commercial disappointment. Paramount still has plans for Star Trek 4, even if they keep shifting. Quentin Tarantino has also been developing an R-rated Star Trek movie, which could be happening in addition to the sequel. But, for now, nothing has been given the green light.

The Star Trek universe panel was one of the first major panels at this year's Comic-Con@Home. Since the event couldn't take place as usual in downtown San Diego, a virtual version filled with dozens of pre-recorded panels that can be viewed by anyone for free is taking place now through Sunday.
