Although there are some pick-ups to be completed, the main unit has wrapped on the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The Star Trek Discovery spin-off series announcement was made by actor, Anson Mount, who plays, Captain Christopher Pike. He took to his Twitter account with the news that the first, ten episode season is now in the can. The series is a prequel to the original 60s Star Trek series, and follows the adventures of Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One a decade before the arrival of Captain Kirk on the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Anson Mount said, "And that's a season 1 main unit WRAP. We owe some pickup shots, most of which will be tackled this fall, but the lion's share of our work is in the can. Thx to our phenomenal crew, thx to Toronto, & thx to our fans for being so patient. We will see you soon!"

A couple of weeks back, Mount teased of exciting things to come for fans in the new series as they began filming the season finale. He tweeted then that "old school fans are going to [be] VERY excited to see what we're trying to pull off with this one." While there have been a few misfires in the Star Trek TV franchise, Mount spoke to Collider back in March and suggested that the new series would be going back to the show's roots this time.

"Well, I think that Star Trek is, by nature, episodic. Now, that doesn't mean that Star Trek can't be other things. Star Trek can be a lot of things, as we've seen in every iteration of it. But classic Trek is really founded on the big idea of the week, and the big idea of the week needs room to breathe. In serialized structure, you're trying to take care of so many relationships that there doesn't tend to be a lot of room for that. Now with that said, I think Discovery does a phenomenal job with that structure and I was very fortunate to be a part of it. Normally, serialized is my taste, as an actor, but this really felt like it needed to be episodic."

Strange New Worlds showrunner, Akiva Goldsman, talked about the new show to The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that the series was both different but also taking a number of cues from the original Star Trek series. She said, "It's a fine line because obviously we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs to the original series and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, and the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of the show Discovery but now it's its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series, that's what we're looking to do." Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ next year.
