Back in November, CBS made the announcement that sci-fi fans had been waiting years for, revealing that the iconic Star Trek franchise is returning to the small screen with a new TV series. Earlier today at the CBS Upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York, CBS unveiled the logo for the new Star Trek within the television series' first-ever promotional video. This highly-anticipated program will premiere in January 2017.

The new Star Trek TV series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network in January 2017. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access. The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International. The first trailer, which debuted on the CBS YouTube page, doesn't reveal any actual footage from the show, but it does tease new crews, new villains and new worlds.

The show will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS's current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series. The new Star Trek will introduce never-before-seen characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

The original series only ran for three seasons, but became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a slew of movies and spinoff TV shows such as Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. The franchise was revitalized on the big screen in 2009 with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and its 2013 follow-up Star Trek Into Darkness. The franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with a new adventure debuting on the big screen as well, Star Trek Beyond, slated for release on July 22.

Bryan Fuller is serving as showrunner and co-writing the pilot script with Alex Kurtzman. The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.
