Ever since the second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted back in April, during the D23 Expo, fans have been impatiently awaiting more footage. Director J.J. Abrams told the Hall H crowd at Comic Con this summer that the next trailer would arrive sometime this fall, and true to his word, earlier tonight, a sneak peek finally came during halftime of the Monday Night Football game. We have broken down this final trailer frame-by-frame with over 90 new photos from the highly-anticipated sci-fi adventure, arriving in theaters December 18.
The Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer launch also coincided with tickets going on sale around the globe. Several theater chains are participating in a massive marathon, where moviegoers will be able to see all seven Star Wars movies. Despite previous reports, the first six movies will not be shown in 3D, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens will in be presented in the immersive format. LucasFilm also debuted a new poster yesterday, which features a bunch of characters such as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and the beloved ball droid BB-8.
This one-sheet gave us our first look at the new Death Star, which we get to see put to action in the latest trailer. Merchandise that debuted last month revealed that this nefarious space station is known as the Starkiller Base, and the posting showed that this base is much different than the Death Star from the original Star Wars trilogy. The name Starkiller is actually an homage to Luke Skywalker, since the character was originally named Luke Starkiller in early script drafts for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. This space station will serve as the headquarters for General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and The First Order.
One character who hasn't been seen in any of the posters, photos or footage thus far is Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. There have been several rumors regarding Luke Skywalker throughout the past two years, some claiming that he has gone into exile following Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, and others claiming that his original lightsaber, which was found in the desert, sends new heroes Rey and Finn on their heroic journey. Unfortunately, this new trailer doesn't feature Luke Skywalker either, so it's likely that we won't learn too much about Luke Skywalker and his plight, or get to see what he looks like, until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy did offer a tantalizing tidbit earlier this month, revealing that Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode IX all revolve around Skywalker's family. While we wait for new details, check out our massive gallery featuring photos from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, which will surely have fans talking for days on end.
