It's a very good time to be a Star Wars fan these days, with Star Wars: Episode VII currently in production and the upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels starting its run on Disney XD later this fall. A new report from Badass Digest reveals LucasFilm and Disney are planning on tying in this show, and other materials such as the upcoming Marvel comics, into the movie canon.
Here's what an unidentified LucasFilm employee had to say in a brief statement.
"We're going to redefine longform storytelling."
The original Star Wars trilogy spawned the Expanded Universe, a massive series of novels, comic books and video games that told peripheral stories outside of the main movie franchise. We reported in April that the new trilogy will avoid the Expanded Universe story lines, which was /lucasfilm-addresses-the-future-of-the-star-wars-expanded-universe/confirmed a few days later by LucasFilm in a statement that revealed Star Wars Rebels will be a part of the movie canon, along with a new series of novels from Del Ray Books. While those who just want to follow the movies will not necessarily need to watch Star Wars Rebels or read the comic books, fans will be "rewarded" for doing so.
