Matt Smith's role in Star Wars 9 may have been revealed. Back in November, a rumor started to spread that Smith was playing a younger version of Emperor Palpatine, but now, a new rumor suggests that he's actually playing one of the Knights of Ren, which seems to make a bit more sense from what we've been hearing about the upcoming third and final installment of the new trilogy. The Knights of Ren have been heavily rumored to have a pretty large part in Star Wars 9 for months now.

According to alleged sources from the Pinewood set, the Knights of Ren are back for Star Wars 9 and Matt Smith is going to be one of them. Additionally it is said that Kylo Ren's old team is in a pretty decent chunk of the movie. The news comes after Smith was reportedly spotted on the set dressed in dark robes and holding a Lightsaber. Obviously, this is a rumor at this time and there has been no official confirmation from Lucasfilm or Disney about who Smith is playing in the sequel.

In addition to a member of the Knights of Ren and young Emperor Palpatine, it has been rumored in the past that Matt Smith is playing General Hux's second-in-command. However, it has also been rumored that Hux won't have a very big part in the movie and that his power is greatly diminished and that he won't be included in the second half of this sequel. If the Knights of Ren are coming back for Star Wars 9, it would make the most sense that Smith could be one of them as opposed to the other rumored characters.

As for who may have taken on Hux's second-in-command position (if that is a real spot), that is believed to be Richard E. Grant, who is said to be playing a "tyrannical First Order general." This, like almost all of the other Star Wars 9 information that we have is unconfirmed, so take it as you like. There are plenty of rumors floating around, but the Knights of Ren is one of the more dominant ones taking over amongst the fan community.

J.J. Abrams is hard at work on Episode IX and there is a lot of pressure riding on this installment. For one, it's the final movie in the latest trilogy, so it's expected to tie up loose ends and deliver a satisfying finale. Secondly, Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi did not satisfy a lot of hardcore Star Wars fans and instead caused a huge backlash that is still talked about today, over a year after the movie originally hit theaters. Abrams and Lucasfilm have a near-impossible task ahead of themselves at the moment. With that being said, the Knights of Ren are something that fans have been asking for, so let's hope that these rumors prove to be true. The Matt Smith rumor was first brought to our attention by Reddit.
