Last year, just a month before the global blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters, LucasFilm and Electronic Arts released the new video game Star Wars Battlefront, which became just as big of a hit as the movie itself. Star Wars Battlefront has already sold more than 14 million units worldwide, exceeding EA's expectations for the Star Wars game. During an earnings conference call earlier this week, EA formally announced that the company will release Star Wars Battlefront 2 sometime in 2017.

Gamespot reports that EA CFO Blake Jorgenson teased on this conference call that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will showcase "bigger and better worlds" and feature content from the "new movies." While a specific release date for the game was not announced, it's certainly possible that the game will be released in conjunction with the December 15, 2017 release date of Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is currently filming in the U.K., under the direction of Rian Johnson. The first Star Wars Battlefront game included content from the original trilogy, but a Battle of Jakku downloadable content (DLC) pack was released in December, that shed some light on the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Since there is practically nothing we know about the Star Wars Episode VIII story, it isn't known what content from the "new movies" will be included in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Blake Jorgenson didn't specifically mention any movies by name, but it's possible that the game could include content from the first spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That movie hits theaters this December, and is set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Blake Jorgenson also revealed on the conference call that EA is planning on releasing a new Star Wars game every year, following Star Wars: Battlefront 2, for the next three or four years. Of course, this follows Disney and LucasFilm's strategy of releasing one movie a year, indefinitely, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story debuting December 16, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, Han Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX sometime in 2019 and a Boba Fett spinoff that is reportedly being planned for a 2020 release.

The original Star Wars Battlefront game takes place in the aftermath of the Rebel victory in the Battle of Endor, where players will experience the events that created the massive, battle-scarred landscape of Jakku shown in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Star Wars: Battlefront will allow fans to live out a wide range of heroic moments and intense battle fantasies of their own - firing blasters, riding speeder bikes and snow speeders, commanding AT-ATs and piloting TIE fighters and the Millennium Falcon. These battles will take place on some of the most iconic planets in the Star Wars universe, including Endor, Hoth, Tatooine and the previously unexplored planet, Sullust.
