During Star Wars Celebration last month, it was confirmed that the video game Star Wars: Battlefront will be released on November 17 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Today, the team behind creating this game at DICE have released new photos that give us our first look at a planet known as Sullust, which was referenced in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, but has never been seen before. Here's what Anton Grandert, Concept Artist at DICE, had to say about Sullust.
"We wanted to create a planet on our own, first trying out different ideas and then deciding on a lava planet. With black sharp rocks, huge land shifts, red lava, turquoise lakes, and white smoke...everything to make it really colorful yet imposing and threatening."
The DICE team, based in Stockholm, Sweden, journeyed to Iceland, which they used as a reference for this new planet. Unlike previous locations such as Endor, Hoth and Tattooine, where the DICE team could simply visit the locations where scenes from the original movies were shot to obtain reference images, they had to find a completely new place for Sullust, with the team deciding on Iceland. Here's what DICE's Petter Skold, Senior Level Artist and Planet Owner of Sullust, had to say about their trip to Iceland.
"We used the source material that we gathered from Iceland to shift and bend to the design detailed in our concepts, which was very fun and difficult process. This was different than content captured from locations of Endor, Hoth and Tatooine which could be used right away."
Sullust is described as "very Imperial and under construction," which will introduce new themes and areas for the players to explore. Of course, we don't know much about how the planet actually fits into the game's narrative, but hopefully we'll learn more as we get closer to the November 17 release. In the meantime, check out the new images below, which include behind-the-scenes shots of the team in Iceland.
