The Star Wars universe is full of many different weapons and each one amazing in its own right. The Z6 riot control baton, blasters, bowcasters, and Vibro axe are just a few that fans of the series claim to be as savage as the owners who wield them. The most iconic of these weapons, of course, is the Jedi lightsaber, which the creators decided to put their own unique twist on by introducing the Darksaber in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Darksaber was revered by the fandom as something of myth and was created by the first (and, currrently, only) Mandalorian who became part of the Jedi Order.
The people of Mandalore considered the Darksaber to be a treasure as it was a symbol of leadership and a formidable blade in battle. Since the Darksaber has held such a symbolic importance, ownership of the blade has become a point of debate throughout the Star Wars universe. Fans have seen this weapon been held by both Mandalorians and non-Mandalorians in a wide variety of comics and animated productions. Here is every character who has wielded the goth-tinged Jedi lightsaber, explained.
Din Djarin
Din Djarin is the latest character in the Star Wars universe to wield the Darksaber. Collider recalls the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, where he defeats Moff Gideon and takes the coveted blade for himself. Din does not seem to take naturally to the blade and instead fights against it. Din himself says that it seems to become heavier with each swing. According to Mandalorian lore, anyone who possess the Darksaber is said to rule Mandalore, which, in Djarin's case, is yet to be seen if he even wants the Darksaber, let alone to rule.
Moff Gideon
Before Din Djarin got ahold of the Darksaber, Moff Gideon was the owner of the blade. Between the conclusion of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the fall of the Empire, the Darksaber transferred from Bo-Katan Kryze to Gideon. Gideon is the leader of the Imperial remnant forces in The Mandalorian. It is not very clear as to how Gideon procured this weapon, but it is assumed that it happened when the Empire ransacked Mandalore. During the chaos, Gideon managed to get his hands on the Darksaber, but it is unclear whether he would be a proficient sword fighter with the blade. At the end of season 2, Star Wars fans watch as the Darksaber finds a more worthy home with Din.
Bo-Katan Kryze
Sabine Wren defeated Viceroy Saxon and unified the Mandalorians in Star Wars Rebels, but she also believed that it was her duty to pass the Darksaber onto Bo-Katan Kryze. Before Kryze was in possession of the blade, Maul had the Darksaber and used it to execute the then-leader of Mandalore, Satine Kryze, and assume power for himself. According to Screen Rant, the blade was supposed to follow the Kryze lineage and after Satine died; it should have been passed to her younger sister Bo-Katan. Bo-Katan initially turned down the Darksaber as she did not think herself worthy to yield such a weapon. After some convincing from Sabine, Bo-Katan accepted the Darksaber and her place in leading Mandalore.
Sabine Wren
Ezra and Kanan talked Sabine Wren into taking possession of the Darksaber in Star Wars Rebels. Sabine realized that the blade held immense power and could unite her people, which was the ultimate reason she took it from Maul's lair. Sabine accepting the legacy of the blade from Kanan Jarrus put the sacred sword back into the hands of a Mandalorian since the days of Pre Vizsla. With the Darksaber, she tried to liberate the people of Mandalore, but her claim to wield the blade was put into question since she did not defeat Maul to obtain it. Sabine defeated Viceroy Saxon, legitimatizing her claim as a worthy inheritor and became the proper ruler of the Mandalorians.
Ezra Bridger / Kanan Jarrus
Neither Ezra nor Kanan ever fully had the Darksaber in their possession. Their hold on the blade was temporary as they passed it to the next true wielder in the final days of the Empire. Maul led Ezra to the blade so that he could perform a ritual that would lead him to his old enemy, Obi-Wan Kenobi. They were attacked by Nightsisters, which forced Ezra to use the blade against them. Maul left to find Obi-Wan, which is when Sabine took hold of the Darksaber, but, feeling unworthy of such a weapon, she passed it to Kanan Jarrus for safe keeping. Kanan learned more about the blade and the importance of the lineage, which made him determined to make Sabine confront her destiny.
Darth Maul
Maul won the Darksaber from Pre Vizsla through Mandalorian single combat ritual, which also allowed him to take control of Mandalore in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This created a rift between Maul and the Mandalorian ranks as he was not one of their own. He found obtaining the blade as a symbolic achievement as it earned him control of the Death Watch and power among the Mandalorians, but he also used the blade alongside his red Sith lightsaber. Maul goes on to use the Darksaber against some heavy hitters in the Star Wars universe like General Greivous and Palpatine.
Pre Vizsla
The House of Vizsla managed to lose their ancestors blade to the Jedi through the multiple conflicts between the Jedi and the Mandalorian. After getting the Darksaber back, the House of Vizsla kept the weapon for many years, passing the item from one leader to the next. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Pre Vizsla led the Mandalorian Death Watch and tried to revert the planet back to its glory days. Pre Vizsla used the Darksaber throughout the Clone Wars and fought big names like Obi-Wan and Ahsoka. Through a bad alliance, he lost the blade to Maul after he double-crossed him once he won the Civil War. Maul was not pleased with the betrayal and, in turn, killed Pre Vizsla for it.
Tarre Vizsla
The very first owner of the Darksaber was the one who created it, and his name is Tarre Vizsla. Very little is known about Tarre within the Star Wars franchise; however, it is known that he lived during the Old Republic era and was the only Mandalorian to be accepted as a Jedi. Through his training, Tarre was required to build his own lightsaber as per Jedi custom. He decided not to go with a blue or green lightsaber, and instead built a very distinct and unique lightsaber that was pitch-black and shaped more like a katana. Tarre possessed the Darksaber while he was the leader of Mandalore and up until his death. It is assumed that the Jedi Order took ownership after his death since the blade spent years in the temple on Coruscant.
