When production started on Star Wars: Episode VIII back in February, Disney and LucasFilm released an updated cast list, which included the primary cast from Star Wars: The Force Awakens along with a few franchise newcomers like Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran. Naturally, we knew that more cast members would be confirmed at some point during the production, but, two months into shooting, we haven't seen any official announcements. Today we have word that director Rian Johnson has in fact cast another actor, Noah Segan, although his actual role remains a mystery.
The news comes from Birth.Movies.Death, where Noah Segan actually contributes as a writer at times, aside from his acting work. Those who are familiar with Rian Johnson's work will certainly recognize Noah Segan, since he has starred in all three of his movies, Brick, The Brothers Bloom and Looper. He even appeared in one of the Breaking Bad episodes Johnson directed, the critically-acclaimed Season 5 episode Ozymandias, in an uncredited role as a firefighter. Noah Segan joining his long time collaborator certainly isn't surprising, although it still isn't known who he's playing.
The B.M.D. team decided to take matters into their own hands, asking anyone who may have information about Noah Segan's role to come forward, since the actor isn't saying a word. Director Rian Johnson even got in on the fun, sending out a tweet to the website asking "for a friend" if they "pay for scoops." It's certainly possible that, even when Star Wars: Episode 8 does hit theaters on December 15, 2017, Noah Segan's character won't be readily identifiable.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens featured a number of prominent actors in small, costumed roles. Simon Pegg played the junk dealer Unkar Plutt, who trades "portions" of food for the parts Rey (Daisy Ridley) brings in, and Daniel Craig portrayed a Stormtrooper who has a memorable scene with Rey. It's certainly possible that Star Wars: Episode VIII will have plenty of characters like Unkar and this unnamed Stormtrooper, that could be played by famous actors.
Aside from his work with Rian Johnson, Noah Segan most recently starred in a slew of indie projects such as War Pigs, The Mind's Eye, and he will next be seen in Get the Girl. We doubt that either Noah Segan or Rian Johnson will come forward with any information regarding this mystery role, but we'll keep you posted if there are any updates. Until then, take a look at the recent tweets from both the director and actor regarding this casting mystery for Star Wars 8.
