Get ready to break out your wallets again, Star Wars fans, because Disney and Lucasfilm are releasing Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a 3D Collector's Edition Blu-ray! Many of you might very well be looking at the Blu-ray you purchased recently thinking that was that. But the studio has just announced that in November, a new version of The Force Awakens is coming, and you'll probably want to own it as well...If you have a 3D TV!
A video was uploaded to the Star Wars YouTube channel to make the announcement for fans. The video didn't offer much, as it was just a portion of the battle sequence outside of Maz Kanata's Castle, punctuated by a look at the cover art for the new Blu-ray, as well as a release date. As frustrating as the prospect of buying another copy of The Force Awakens already may be to some fans, the four-disc edition has a lot of additional bonus features that may make it equally hard to pass up.
Perhaps the most appealing feature, which was noticeably absent from the original Blu-ray release, is a commentary track from director J.J. Abrams. There will also be a couple of new featurettes, Foley: A Sonic Tale and Sounds of the Resistance, based around some of the audio and sound effects that were done for The Force Awakens. There will also be some deleted scenes not featured on the initial Blu-ray release. Though, none of these exciting never-before-seen moments have been announced at this time. A new wardrobe documentary called Dressing the Galaxy will be included, as well as a chat with stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega called The Scavenger and the Stormtrooper, which was a Target exclusive before now. And a weapons featurette called Inside the Armory. Here's the list as presented in the press release.
"Audio Commentary with J.J. Abrams: Enter the mind of visionary director J.J. Abrams as he reveals the creative and complex choices made while developing the first film in the new Star Wars trilogy. Foley: A Sonic Tale: Foley artists, consisting of old pros and new talent, unite to bring the world of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" alive through the matching of sound to action. Sounds of the Resistance: Hear how the epic sound design of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" moves the Star Wars legacy forward. Deleted Scenes: View never-before-shared scenes that didn't make the film's final cut. Dressing the Galaxy: Costume Designer Michael Kaplan reveals how the costumes of the original Star Wars movies were re-envisioned for a new generation. The Scavenger and the Stormtrooper: A Conversation with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega: The two new stars share the thrill of working together on the adventure of a lifetime and becoming part of the Star Wars legacy. Inside the Armory: Take a fascinating tour through the design and creation of the weaponry in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Classic Bonus Features: These offerings from the April release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens include the complete story behind the making of the film, an unforgettable cast table read, insights from legendary composer John Williams, and deleted scenes, as well as features that dig deeper into the creation of new characters such as BB-8, the design of the climactic lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo Ren, the film's remarkable digital artistry, and the Star Wars: Force for Change global aid initiative."
The initial Blu-ray release for Star Wars: The Force Awakens happened back in April, and it certainly didn't seem unlikely that Disney and Lucasfilm would put out another version at some point. But, given that this edition is coming out so soon after could get some fans justifiably irritated. Disney paid more than $4 billion for all of Lucasfilm in 2012, so of course the studio is going to do everything that they can to profit from Star Wars. According to The Numbers, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already sold nearly 4.5 million copies, and it is likely a sizable chunk of those fans would have purchased this collector's edition first, instead of having to shell out twice. The official press release goes onto state the following.
"The Force is calling to you again. Only this time, in 3D. The latest film in Star Wars saga is coming home - for the first time in immersive 3D - with Star Wars: The Force Awakens 3D Collector's Edition. Announced today, the four-disc collection will release this fall, rolling out October 31 and arriving in the US and Canada on November 15. Encased in stunning collectible packaging, the set contains the film's original theatrical release on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, Digital HD, and DVD, along with originally released bonus features and brand-new bonus material, including additional deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes conversations with cast and crew, and revealing, never-before released audio commentary by director J.J. Abrams. (Note that Collector's Edition configuration may vary by territory.) Not even Maz's castle has a treasure like this."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered box office records upon its debut, grossing over $936 million domestic and $2 billion worldwide. With rave reviews from critics and fans alike, it garnered five Academy Award nominations and took home the BAFTA Award for Special Visual Effects. Featuring new heroes and villains, along with classic characters, thrilling action, and a heartfelt story, Star Wars: The Force Awakens connected with fans and deepened the mythology of Star Wars - and kicked off a new era of Star Wars that will continue with the first in a series of standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, premiering December 16, 2016.
The $4 billion plus that Disney spent on Lucasfilm a little more than four years ago has proved to be a wise investment, as The Force Awakens has already made a large chunk of that money back for them. The movie went on to become the third highest grossing movie of all-time, only behind Titanic and Avatar. It looks like Disney is going to really milk the Star Wars cow dry, because the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Collector's Edition is coming out November 15, just in time for the holiday shopping season. You can check out the cover art for the new four-disc edition of The Force Awakens for yourself along with the trailer.
