Star Wars is a long-running science fiction multimedia franchise that revolves around the Skywalker family, an invisible power called the Force, and the mysterious order of Force-wielders referred to as the Jedi. With dozens of films, TV shows, comic books, novels, and video games to choose from, the Star Wars franchise is a pit of never-ending content that is constantly bringing something new to the table.

Despite the fact that Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 (per USA Today), we can't forget the fact that George Lucas, creator of the billion-dollar franchise, has been the heart and soul of the galaxy far, far away, bringing us the characters we all know and love. While Lucas has since taken a step back, he played a huge role in bringing Star Wars up to where it is today. That being said, that doesn't mean that he loved every choice that was made. Some may be surprised to know that Lucas was not a fan of Jabba the Hutt. Here's why.

Jabba the Hutt's Introduction

Before Jabba the Hutt emerged as the humongous slug-like creature, he was originally a human. In Jabba's first appearance in A New Hope, he is a large man wearing a fur coat who is more of a typical gangster portrayed by Declan Mulholland. Lucas was extremely unhappy with the way the scene turned out and wound up cutting it from the film altogether. However, in 1997 a special edition of the trilogy was released, with the scene reinserted and a CGI Jabba replacing Mulholland. The scene has since been revamped a number of times — one of many changes to A New Hope through the years — to bring the best quality to audiences. Despite Lucas' decision to reinsert the scene into the film, he has since revealed that he's bounced back and forth between removing the scene once more.

Lucas Didn't Like the Jabba Puppet

In Return of the Jedi, we get to see Jabba in all his disgusting glory surrounded by his entourage in his luxurious palace, partying like there's no tomorrow. Jabba's massive puppet was met with mixed reviews, with some loving the utilization of advanced puppetry to create an other-worldly creature, while others criticized the choice. Lucas was among those who thought that Jabba was a bit of a nuisance. Between the weight of the puppet alone, the half-a-million dollar price-tag and the fact that the Jabba puppet needed a number of people to operate it, Lucas somewhat regretted his decision to make a giant puppet to play the gangster. Had CGI been available at the time, it's safe to assume that the majestic Jabba puppet would not exist.

Jabba the Hutt's Legacy

Jabba the Hutt is one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars universe, and while his scummy underhanded ways lead to both Han and Luke almost shaking hands with death, he is still a fan-favorite. While Lucas disliked Jabba's puppet, it was a sight to see such a phenomenal piece of art in action, especially considering the limited 80s technology available at the time. While there are a number of things that Lucas does not like about Jabba, even he cannot deny the effect that the gangster had on-screen.
