The Star Wars franchise has spanned the past four decades with a plethora of content. From nine live-action films to several TV series to novels and video games, it would seem there is no form of media left untouched by the series. Thanks to the wide array of planets and systems in the Star Wars universe, the number of characters introduced into the franchise is unending. Whether it's a killer Bounty Hunter like Cad Bane or an all-powerful Jedi like Luke Skywalker, Star Wars always delivers with new and interesting characters. The most recent character to stir the pot is the little green beast featured in The Mandalorian known as Grogu AKA Baby Yoda.

Little is known about the character, but one thin for sure is that Grogu is exceedingly powerful with the Force, especially considering his age. Many have theorized that Grogu’s mysterious appearance may have something to do with the Prophecy of the Chosen One. As outlined by Screen Rant, the prophecy of the Chosen One in Star Wars lore tells the destiny of the one person who brings balance to the Force. While this prophecy has not been spoken of since the fall of Anakin Skywalker, most believe that Anakin did not fulfill his duty and was not actually the Chosen One. This leaves the spot of the Chosen One up for grabs, and Grogu seems a decent candidate for this role.

Anakin Skywalker Was the First Chosen One

Anakin was a mystery to all when he encountered Qui-Gon on Tatooine. Thanks to Qui-Gon’s keen senses, he recognized the Force within Anakin and decided to investigate further. Upon further investigation, it was revealed by Anakin’s mother Shmi that he had no father. This only confirmed Qui-Gon’s suspicions of Anakin being the Chosen One, created by Midi-chlorians to bring balance to the Force. It was thanks to Qui-Gon’s strong belief in the prophecy that Anakin received training from the Jedi Order and became one of the strongest Jedi who ever lived. However, his thoughts and deeds became manipulated by Palpatine, who used Anakin’s greatest weakness against him, his love for Padmé. After Anakin was turned to the Dark Side, he became Darth Vader and was responsible for the near-extinction of the Jedi. While many believe that he did not fulfill his destiny as the Chosen One, some argue that he did bring balance to the Force, reducing the numbers to even out the dark with the light. The prophecy indeed states that the Chosen One would bring balance to the Force, not that all Dark would be eliminated.

The Mystery of Grogu

In The Mandalorian, Grogu AKA The Child was introduced as a bounty retrieved by the Mandalorian Din Djarin for commanders of what remains of the Empire, which would later become the First Order. While Grogu’s name is not revealed until later in the series, he is exceedingly powerful with the Force, able to hold back a powerful beast from attacking the Mandalorian. While Grogu is of the same species as the famous Master Yoda, hence his nickname Baby Yoda, little else is known about this creature. His origins have yet to be revealed, with some doubting that any more about this little green creature will ever be revealed. With all this mystery surrounding Grogu, much of the audience is wondering how important he truly is in the grand scheme of things as this little guy had a high price on his head. While many have chalked that up to his level of Force-sensitivity, many have begun to wonder if Grogu is the New Chosen One, created by Midi-chlorians.

Grogu Rejects Luke's Jedi Training

Luke Skywalker and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars
Disney Platform Distribution

In The Book of Boba Fett, a young Luke Skywalker is shown training Grogu, trying to help him hone his powers with the Force, while Din Djarin goes on a quest to bring the little creature a gift of Beskar chainmail. While Ahsoka prevents them from reuniting, Luke gives Grogu the choice to take the gift from Din and return to his side or to become a great Jedi with Luke’s training. Grogu makes the choice to return to the Mandalorian. With this decision, it’s clear that Grogu has a preference for being with his surrogate father rather than learning the ins and outs of being a true Jedi. Grogu’s decision has made it clear that he will not become a Jedi under Luke and will instead enjoy his life alongside the Bounty Hunter. While Grogu may have the potential to be the Chosen One, his choice to not receive Jedi training does little to reinforce the theory that he may be the Chosen One. Despite this, audiences look forward to seeing Grogu return for the third season of The Mandalorian.
