Everyone’s favorite Mandalorian foundling Grogu (more commonly known as Baby Yoda or The Child) has grown stronger throughout the first and second seasons of The Mandalorian and, most recently, The Book of Boba Fett. It stands to reason that this trend will continue as Grogu himself continues to hone his power throughout the upcoming season three of the popular Star Wars spinoff. While Grogu’s origins remains a mystery, any fan of Star Wars knows that Grogu is a member of the same unknown species as Yoda and Jedi Master Yaddle and that this unnamed species has a deep connection to The Force.

In the original series of films, The Force is described as a ubiquitous spiritual power that could be channeled by only a chosen few. It was not until the release of The Phantom Menace in 1999 that midi-chlorians (which measure one’s potential connection to The Force) were introduced to explain the mythical force to legions of fans, much to their dismay. That said, Grogu’s midi-chlorian count has never been mentioned specifically and can only be speculated on. A release date for the highly anticipated third season of The Mandalorian has not yet been announced, however, in a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show star Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Moff Gideon, has hinted the show may return in the summer of 2022.

How Powerful is Grogu?

Throughout the first and second seasons of The Mandalorian, we see Grogu display his powers on several occasions. While he lacks control of his innate abilities early on, he does appear to be naturally gifted in the ways of The Force. Initially, Baby Yoda was only able to use his powers for levitation, rather than assist in battle, having never received proper Jedi training. One such instance is in "Chapter 2: The Child," when he uses his power to levitate and move a giant Mudhorn. At the end of season 2, Luke Skywalker takes Grogu under his wing and imbues him with the discipline necessary to harness his powers, most of which takes place in The Book of Boba Fett. As Grogu trains with Luke, his powers grow and by the end of their time together, Grogu has more control over The Force. This is proven when he subdues Boba’s malicious Rancor (and then promptly takes a nap). There are other instances as well throughout the series that prove Grogu is very powerful for his age. For instance, when he breaks out the big guns and “defends” Mando from Cara Dune in a friendly arm wrestle using a Force-Choke, or in Season 2 when he is kidnapped by the Empire and defends himself against two Stormtroopers using his powers to effortlessly Force-Choke them and throw them about like rag dolls. More importantly, Grogu can Force-Heal, which is a rare ability that raises even more questions about his powers.

Is Grogu Stronger Than Anakin Skywalker?

Grogu has remained mostly a mystery, with little tidbits being divulged here and there throughout the Star Wars series he's appeared in. He is of the same unknown species as Yoda and Yaddle of previous Star Wars fare. That said, both Yoda and Yaddle have a high midi-chlorian count in their blood. Yoda’s m-count was roughly 18000, while Yaddle’s was closer to 12000. It is reasonable to assume that whatever species they are a part of, it is a deeply Force-sensitive one. It is also reasonable to assume that Grogu too would have a high M-count, which would make him very powerful indeed.

Most fans want to know is Grogu more powerful than Anakin — the truth is, without knowing his M-Count, there is no way to be certain. As mentioned above, he was able to Force-Choke two stormtroopers simultaneously, which is a feat not previously accomplished, even by Darth Vader himself. An interesting theory would suggest the two are more closely related than meets the eye. As previously mentioned, Grogu can heal using the power of The Force. The book Star Wars: Secrets of the Sith recently revealed that only members of a “Force dyad” can Force-Heal, which means Grogu is one half of a Force dyad, the other half very likely being Anakin Skywalker as they were born in the same year, and Anakin's birth would have then prompted Grogu's birth to balance out his eventual dark side. The general rule of a Force dyad is it can only exist with a light and a dark side. Kylo Ren and Rey are another example of a Force dyad. It is said, in a Force dyad, that the powers mirror and amplify one another, which could indicate that Grogu is at the very least of equal strength to Anakin Skywalker.

Will Grogu Become a Jedi?

In The Book of Boba Fett, we see Luke Skywalker offer Grogu a choice between Mandalorian armor or a lightsaber, making it clear that he can only choose one and whichever he chooses will determine his path forward to either return home or become Luke’s first student at his fledgling Jedi Academy. It is later revealed that Grogu chose the armor and returns to Mando, effectively turning away from the path of the Jedi. If The Child were to train with Luke Skywalker, notoriously known as one of the most powerful Jedi of all time, he would no doubt make a powerful Jedi like his predecessor Grand Master Yoda. The progress he made with Luke in The Book of Boba Fett has already proven useful in helping him hone his powers. That said, the path of the Jedi does not seem to be in the cards for Grogu in the immediate future. Keep in mind Baby Yoda is only a mere 50-years-old, which for his species makes him an infant. He has a lifetime ahead of him to find his path, pursue Jedi training, and realize his full potential. After all, Yoda lived to be nearly 1000 years old. It would be great to see Grogu revisit Jedi training at some point in the series, and we look forward to the day when he does as the only way to hone his skills in The Force is to train with an experienced master.
