Before Lawrence Kasdan came aboard to help director J.J. Abrams rewrite the script for Star Wars: Episode VII, the filmmaker was attached to write one of the spin-off movies, although, in typical LucasFilm fashion, it wasn't known which character he might take on. A new report from Schmoes Know reveals that the writer will be tackling the Boba Fett spin-off, and that he may be basing his script on elements from the Expanded Universe.

This contradicts producer Simon Kinberg's statement in April, where he revealed that the new trilogy and the spin-offs will be based on the six previously-released movies, and not the wealth of other material in the Expanded Universe.

There is speculation that The Last One Standing, a short story written by Daniel Keyes Moran that was featured in the Tales of the Bounty Hunter anthology, may be the Expanded Universe source Lawrence Kasdan is drawing from. That story documents Boba Fett's early life and his obsession and rivalry with Han Solo.

This isn't exactly breaking news, though, since Metalocalypse director Jon Schnepp revealed in January that he knew "for a fact" that Lawrence Kasdan is writing the Boba Fett movie. Still, nothing has been confirmed by Disney/LucasFilm yet, but perhaps the reason we haven't gotten any official word about this spin-off stems from an April report that indicates this Boba Fett movie is in trouble, with Disney unsure on whether to make him a protagonist or keep him as the villain.

Gareth Edwards is directing the first Star Wars Spin-Off from a script by Gary Whitta, which is slated for release in December 2016. Although many believe that this is the Boba Fett project, that may not be the case, if Lawrence Kasdan is writing the Boba Fett script. It's also possible that Gary Whitta came on board to polish or rewrite Lawrence Kasdan's original script, but naturally, that has not been confirmed either.

Josh Trank was announced last week as the second spin-off director, which many believe is the Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off. No writer was announced for that project, but it could be either Lawrence Kasdan or Simon Kinberg. We also reported last month that a third spin-off, reportedly entitled Red 5, will follow Luke Skywalker's X-Wing squadron. That report also included a rundown that revealed the Boba Fett spin-off will hit theaters in 2016, Han Solo's stand alone movie will debut in 2018 and Red 5 will arrive in 2020.
