A great Star Wars mystery is finally set to be unraveled in the pages of a new book from Marvel Comics. Marvel recently revealed that they are set to end all of the current Star Wars books in favor of starting fresh with some new series. The flagship book is set to hit shelves next month with its first issue, but its issue #3 that may be of particular interest to fans, as it looks like this comic will finally reveal what happened to Luke's lightsaber after The Empire Strikes Back.

For those who need a little refresher, when Luke squared off with Vader at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, his hand was cut off and the Anakin Skywalker lightsaber that was given to him by Obi-Wan, fell into the oblivion of Cloud City. When we saw Luke in Return of the Jedi, he had a new green lightsaber. We didn't see Luke/Anakin's blue lightsaber again until Rey finds it in The Force Awakens at Maz's palace. Unfortunately, Maz doesn't offer an explanation for how it got there.

Recently a preview of Star Wars #3 was released and it seems this big question will have an answer. The book takes place not long after the events of The Empire Strikes Back. Per the official synopsis, it sounds like Luke, Leia and Lando will be heading back to Cloud City to retrieve the lightsaber. The synopsis reads as follows.

"The end of the war and the final defeat of the Rebel Alliance are inevitable as the cunning Imperial Commander Zahra unleashes her fury against the splintered and scattered survivors. But where have the Rebellion's greatest heroes gone when their cause needs them the most? Luke Skywalker's only hope at becoming a Jedi Knight was lost during his battle with Darth Vader ...and so he, Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian must return to Cloud City to find it! But Leia has her own covert mission to accomplish there...and Lando's mysterious reason for returning could very well ruin their only chance at success! "

The cover art features the trio, joined by Chewbacca, standing by the Millennium Falcon on Cloud City, with stormtroopers greeting them. Clearly, getting the lightsaber will be easier said than done. The synopsis explains they are at least going to try and get the lightsaber. Will they be successful? That's another question entirely, but at the very least this is going to be addressed. Whether or not this will explain how the weapon eventually made its way to Maz is also up in the air.

Given that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to hit theaters on December 20, some of this may be explained on the big screen as well. Either way, a longstanding mystery in a galaxy far, far away will finally have some light shed upon it in the not-too-distant future. Star Wars #3 hits shelves on February 26, 2020, from Marvel Comics. Be sure to check out the cover art from the book below. This news comes to us via Previewsworld.
