Way back in September 2014, a rumor surfaced that Disney and LucasFilm were contemplating a new Star Wars spin-off based on the beloved character Obi-Wan Kenobi, a report which landed just after the character was voted as the most popular in the entire franchise. Sadly, nothing has ever been confirmed about an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, but if one does happen, Disney might have a prospective director waiting in the wings, Ewen McGregor. While promoting his directorial debut, American Pastoral, Ewan McGregor had this to say, when asked about the possibility of directing an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off.

"Oh my god, I never thought of that! Well, there you go! I don't know. I literally never thought of that before. I've always said when people ask me about it, that I'd be up for doing it, of course. I'd like to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again, and I've always thought there's got to be a great story between the last one I made [Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge Of The Sith] and Alec Guinness' one here. So I've always said that I'd be up for that, but you're the first person to suggest that I might direct it! Just have a word with Disney."

While there hasn't been any official talk of an Obi-Wan spin-off, there have been plenty of rumors, including one unconfirmed story that claimed LucasFilm was developing an Obi-Wan trilogy. As of now, there is a third spin-off currently in the works, which is believed to hit theaters in 2020, but that movie is rumored to focus on Boba Fett, not Obi-Wan Kenobi. Then again, another report claimed that Disney wants to release one Star Wars movie per year, indefinitely, so it's certainly possible that this Obi-Wan movie could arrive at some point in the future. While it certainly seems that the actor/filmmaker is interested in directing a potential Obi-Wan movie, during his CinemaBlend interview, nothing is set in stone yet.

Last week, Ewan McGregor revealed in another interview for American Pastoral that he would actually like to see two Obi-Wan Kenobi movies, which would explore the time between his portrayal of this Jedi master and Alec Guinness' portrayal. There were previously rumors that he was in talks with Disney for a mystery project, but it was never confirmed to be a Star Wars movie. Regardless, Ewan McGregor seems more than eager to return on either, or both, sides of the camera for a new Obi-Wan movie.

American Pastoral marks Ewan McGregor's directorial debut, but while he doesn't have any further directorial projects locked up yet, it would be interesting to see if he would actually take the helm of a Star Wars spin-off. Disney and LucasFilm have yet to announce any new Star Wars projects aside from new sequel trilogy and three spin-offs, but hopefully we'll have more news soon. Given the popularity of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it wouldn't be surprising if some new project does end up happening in the future.
