In addition to the live-action Star Wars TV series that Jon Favreau is developing, Disney has announced that they're also making a new animated series entitled Star Wars Resistance, which will take place before the events of The Force Awakens and debut this fall. A new animated series comes at the perfect time for the franchise since Star Wars Rebels recently ended after 4 successful seasons, following the fan-favorite Clone Wars series. The Star Wars: Resistance series will also feature some pretty well-known voice talent that should signal some excitement from Star Wars fans.

The Star Wars: Resistance series will focus on the early days of the Resistance as seen through the perspective of a new character, Kazuda Xiono, who is "a young pilot recruited to help spy on the First Order." Since the new show will focus on the Resistance, it will feature the voice acting talents of Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron as well as Gwendoline Christy as Captain Phasma. BB-8 will also be in the mix and is shown in the new logo artwork promoting the series. It isn't clear at this time, but fans might end up seeing Leia Organa, Snoke, Kylo Ren, and other favorites in Star Wars: Resistance.

Dave Filoni, who was the showrunner for Clone Wars and Rebels, will take over on Star Wars: Resistance as well, which should come as a comfort for most hardcore Star Wars fans. Filoni notes that the new series is based on his interest in history, specifically World War II. Additionally, he added that there could be some racing excitement in the new show. He had this to say.

"The idea for Star Wars: Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that's been a big influence on me. There's a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we've captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time."

In addition to Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christy, Star Wars: Resistance will also feature the voices of Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (Duck Tales), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy's Tiny Tea Time). Though it isn't clear at this time who will voice which character. There's definitely some talent behind the voices, so it will be interesting to see where the story goes and how much of it leads into The Force Awakens.

It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan at the moment, though the most hardcore of those fans might disagree. Solo: A Star Wars Story is less than a month away, Star Wars 9 begins production this summer, two possible new trilogies on the way, and now a new animated series is coming to Disney XD. Specific details surrounding the Star Wars: Resistance series, like a premiere date, will be announced soon. Until then, you can head over to StarWars for more information.
