Disney has announced when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will open the Rise of the Resistance ride. The Anaheim theme park has had the new addition open since May, but the Rise of the Resistance ride won't be coming for a bit longer. The Star Wars-themed land will be opening at the Orlando park later this summer and it will also open without the latest attraction. Some fans were upset to learn that the new additions to the park were opening while incomplete, while others just look at it as another excuse to go to Disneyland.
Rise of the Resistance will open at the Orlando park on December 5th, which also just happens to be the day Walt Disney was born in 1901. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Anaheim won't be getting the new ride until January 17th, 2020. "As soon as work is completed at Walt Disney World, Imagineers will head back to California to complete their mission at Disneyland Resort," states a press release. Since Disney World's Galaxy's Edge is still under construction, it makes sense they would finish Rise of the Resistance there first.
It was originally thought Disneyland would get Rise of the Resistance by the end of the year since Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opened there first. January 2020 is quite a long way from the park's soft opening in May and some fans will probably be more than a little upset over the delay. With that being said, the ride does sound like it's going to be a lot of fun and worth the wait. You can read a description from the press release below.
"When it opens, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will blur the lines between fantasy and reality and will put guests in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Guests will be recruited to join Rey and General Organa at a secret base. Along the way, they will be captured by a First Order Star Destroyer. With the help of some heroes of the Resistance, they break out and must escape the Star Destroyer, protect the secret base, and stay one step ahead of Kylo Ren."
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge guests are already being treated to hints of what Rise of the Resistance will have to offer with Kylo Ren and the First Order stalking the grounds looking for recruits and the Resistance doing the same. Disney has done a good job so far in making the new area of the park as immersive as possible and that will only get better when Rise of the Resistance finally opens up. For now, fans can head over to the Anaheim park to get a taste before it becomes fully operational in January.
As for the wait on Rise of the Resistance, it was originally believed it might contain spoilers for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars sequel Rise of Skywalker. However, with the December 5th release date for the Orlando park and the December 20th release of the movie, this isn't the case. Instead, it looks like there may have been some trouble behind-the-scenes during the original development phase. The Disney Parks Blog was the first to announce the Rise of the Resistance news.
