The Star Wars hype train is officially speeding down the tracks. Disney and Lucasfilm held the world premier for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last night in Los Angeles} and while most of us have to wait until at least Thursday night to see the movie, those who did see it have been sharing their early reactions online. To put it lightly, they have been extremely positive, with many calling it one of the best Star Wars movies ever made.
Twitter was flooded with early reactions from those in attendance at the premiere for Star Wars: Rogue One. We will be sure to keep this spoiler free, but some of the most positive reactions for the movie put it right up there with Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, which are pretty much universally considered to be the two best Star Wars movies made to date. That is high praise and should come as a massive encouragement to those eagerly awaiting to see the very first ever Star Wars spinoff movie. Wil Wheaton was in attendance at the screening and here is what he had to say about it.
"The last time I loved a Star Wars movie as much as I loved #RogueOne, it was 1977.'
Star Wars: Rogue One directly connects to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, as it tells the story of the the Rebels got their hands on the Death Star plans, which was teased in the original movie's opening crawl. There really wasn't much in the way of criticism in these early reactions, but Vulture editor Kyle Buchanan did say that some of the plot elements are a bit murky, though it doesn't detract from the overall experience. Here is what he had to say.
"ROGUE ONE: The plotting and objectives are needlessly murky, but the look of this thing is *ravishing*. Drop the "why" and embrace the "wow"
These early reactions should come as a relief to not only Disney and Lucasfilm, but to fans who may have been worried about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. There was some significant chatter going on several months ago when it was announced that the movie would have to undergo significant reshoots, with some reports claiming that early cuts of the movie were a "mess." Even if that was true, it looks like director Gareth Edwards was able to pull it together, with the help of writer Tony Gilroy.
Most Star Wars fans really enjoyedStar Wars: The Force Awakens, but the prospect of something a little more fresh feeling is certainly exciting for fans. The Force Awakens was heavily influenced by the original Star Wars so despite it being satisfying, it wasn't the most original movie in the history of the franchise. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, on the other hand, is something we have never seen before, while retaining familiar elements. The movie stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk, Diego Luna, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang and Forest Whitaker, in addition to featuring Darth Vader, who is once again being voiced by James Earl Jones. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16. You can check out some of the early reactions for yourself below.
