Though we heard quite a bit about the Knights of Ren heading into Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we didn't learn much about them in the actual movie itself. And we only caught a brief fleeting glimpse of the dark warriors as part of Rey's lightsaber flashback. We've heard plenty of rumors that this gang, which Kylo Ren leads, will appear in Star Wars: Episode VIII. But apparently they have enough of a cool backstory that they could feature in their own standalone movie.

While out promoting Star Trek Beyond, which he produced, The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams was asked by Collider what specific Star Wars spinoff he'd like to see. And his answer was a standalone Knights of Ren movie. He explains this, revealing that the Knights do have a backstory that is worth delving into. And it's evidently one we won't be seeing or hearing much about in Star Wars 8.

"I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who's running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons. There isn't something that I'd love to see-I guess the one thing I would say is there's a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell."

Recent Star Wars rumors claim that Luke Skywalker will have an epic face-off with the Knights of Ren in Star Wars 8. Kylo Ren dispatches his minions on the master Jedi while engaging Rey in a fight. Though, the Knights prove to be no match for Skywalker, who shows off some new Jedi tricks in dispatching them quite quickly. These scenes were witnessed by several onlookers in view of the Star Wars 8 set in Ireland. Though it has been noted that it isn't known whether these are all of the Knights, or just a small faction of this army, or how they play into the rest of the storyline.

LucasFilm and Disney plan on making Star Wars movies for the rest of eternity, or at least until they're no longer profitable. So a Knights of Ren movie certainly is possible, though we won't see it until at least the next decade. The first spinoff is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which arrives this December. It will be followed by Star Wars 8 in December 2017, and then the original trilogy prequel Han Solo: A Star Wars Story in summer 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX will arrive December 2019. And there is a third spinoff planned for summer 2020, but the title hasn't been officially announced. Many believe the third spinoff will revolve around Boba Fett, who is rumored to have a cameo in Rogue One.

J.J. Abrams has made it known that he has no interest in directing another Star Wars movie, though perhaps in the next few years he'll change his mind. Perhaps if LucasFilm and Disney seriously consider setting up a Knights of Ren standalone adventure. It isn't known when the next batch of Star Wars Story anthology movies will be unveiled, but we've often hear rumors that classic characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Jabba The Hutt could all get their own movies at some point down the road.
