Following The Rise of Skywalker this Christmas, Star Wars fans won't have to wait long for another movie. Disney has announced that an all-new Star Wars trilogy will kick off in December 2022, with the second installment coming in 2024 and the final chapter dropping during the holidays in 2026. These movies are being headed up by Game of Thrones showrunners and TV creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. When that news was first announced, most Star Wars fans were excited by the possibility. Now, many of those same fans believe that these two men totally botch the execution of Game of Thrones season 8, ruining the series with its final episodes. They don't want to see that happen with Star Wars. So a new petition has been launched to proactively get them fired.
This comes after over a million Game of Thrones fans launched a petition for HBO to completely rewrite and reshoot season 8. That's something that will probably never happen, and the closest fans will get to a rewrite is George R.R. Martin's upcoming "Ice and Fire" books, which he has already confirmed will change the ending from what fans saw on the small screen. Though by how much has yet to be determined.
While the Game of Thrones petition captured the imagination of many, and garnered a lot of attention. Noting is going to come of it, as far as we can see. So now these same fans are turning the tide of the conversation at Change.org with a campaign that is called 'Keep Game of Thrones writers away from Star Wars!' Thus far, the petition has gained 12,918 signatures as of this writing from the 15K being sought. The page even claims that 'George R.R. Martin' started the petition but that's just someone having some cheeky fun, as Martin is far too busy trying to finish his Game of Thrones books, and we doubt he'd ever start a petition like this. The petition offers this food for thought.
"Putting the Game of Thrones writers (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) in charge of Star Wars is not only a controversial decision but a mistake, plain and simple. This whole season of the HBO show, which wraps up next week, has tested fans with unpopular, illogical, immersion breaking plot twists and character developments. Seeing how these writers handled the most popular TV Show of a generation and seeing how the fans are reacting to it should not be rewarded with giving them the most popular movie franchise in the world!
It is in the company's best interest to remove David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as writers on their upcoming film. The writers have a crutch for plot devices and rushed stories, with emphasis on "shock and awe" storytelling and eager to leave projects half-finished when they have other projects on the horizon. Their respect of lore alone does not make them fit for this project The latest episode of Game of Thrones got positive reviews from a record-low 46% of critics, according to aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, every episode this season has received worse reviews than the one before it. This will happen with every installment of Star Wars that they touch! Save the franchise from completely being ruined, please!
I've seen a petition called "Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers." going viral on the internet but you should know that's not a possibility! What is a possibility is stopping a great franchise from being buried by those same writers who caused the first petition to go viral. There are plenty of talented writers and producers loyal to the franchise that would make much better work in the Star Wars Universe."
At this time, it is believed that Disney and Lucasfilm have completely canceled all of the upcoming character based standalone Star Wars movies such as Obi-Wan and Boba Fett. And it's highly unlikely that Solo 2 will ever happen, even though there is a strong fan campaign going right now to get the sequel off the ground. Nothing much ever comes out of these petitions, but this past month Sony did delay Sonic the Hedgehog after much fan outcry over the design of the main character, with VFX changes now being made. Sonic will run into theaters in 2020 for the Valentine's Day Weekend. Will David Benioff and D.B. Weiss get fired from their Star Wars project? Is Rian Johnson still helping in some capacity? We've seen plenty of filmmakers get axed from this universe since Disney acquired it. So who knows. Anything is possible.
