Stephen King, Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road and Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment are eyeing the feature rights to King's seven-book fantasy series The Dark Tower, which is set in alternate world resembling the Old West and focuses on the last member of an ancient order of "gunslingers" and his quest toward a tower that's also the center of all universes.

According to Variety, the first book, "The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger" was published in 1982. The final book, "The Dark Tower VII," was published in 2004.

The project was in development at J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot banner, but hasn't been set up yet at a studio.

No production date has been set.
