John Heyman has been trying to make his hapless British ski jumper flick Eddie the Eagle for quite a few years now. According to Variety, the film will finally go into production this January with Steve Coogan in the title role.
Sean Macaulay's script, based on an original draft by Simon Kelton, revolves around Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the first skier from Great Britain to enter the Olympics. During the 1988 Olympics, he came in last in both of his main events.
Coogan stated, "His story is a very British story, and he is a very British kind of hero. When I read the story, I found it funny but, more surprisingly, quite moving. Quirky, dysfunctional, slightly nerdy, but his balls must be made of titanium."
