Maybe Steve Martin can be the next comedian to play Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live. At the Kennedy Center Honors, the president of the United States appeared to celebrate artists including Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, and Lorne Michaels. Referring to Michaels, Biden joked that the Saturday Night Live creator was "trying out seven guys to play me," referring to all of those who've imitated Biden on the sketch comedy program over the years. Cue Steve Martin, who was present and volunteered to be number eight.

"Do you want me to play you?" Martin asked the president, prompting some laughter from the crowd. To that, Joe Biden responded, "Steve, I'm afraid you understand me too well."

Biden then went on to praise Lorne Michaels for his work on SNL, noting, "Lorne has proved that satire about our leaders, about our society, is a quintessential American thing to do, and a hallmark of any democratic society. Like good journalism, comedy holds a mirror up to ourselves to reflect on the good, the bad, and the truth. It matters... Throughout my career, I've met nearly every world leader, and I'll tell you, not everyone sees satire that way. You'd all be in jail."

Be that at it may, seven actors have already played Joe Biden on SNL at different points. The appearances date back 30 years with Kevin Nealon playing Biden on a classic episode from 1991. Other actors to parody Biden in the years since including Jason Sudeikis, Woody Harrelson, Jim Carrey, Alex Moffat, John Mulaney, and new cast member James Austin Johnson. For his part, many fans feel Johnson has been shining with his latest take on the president, and he could end up portraying Biden for some time to come.

“Though my term was only meant to be 6 weeks, I was thrilled to be elected as your SNL President,” Jim Carrey said on Twitter last year after wrapping up his own stint playing Biden on SNL. ”I would love to go forward knowing that Biden was the victor because I nailed that s---. But I am just one in a long line of proud, fighting SNL Bidens!”

Jason Sudeikis, who now impresses critics with his work on the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, spent many years playing Biden. In October, Sudeikis returned as the host of Saturday Night Live, and he used the opportunity to bring back his version of the president. He was featured in a sketch with Alex Moffat and James Austin Johnson also playing their own spoof Bidens, uniting the actors for a "Ghosts of Biden Past" segment. Perhaps if Steve Martin had his way, he could have been a part of the sketch as well.

We may not see Steve Martin playing Joe Biden, but the acclaimed comedy actor can still be seen doing what he does best on Hulu. He recently starred with Martin Short and Selena Gomez in the series Only Murders in the Building, which just recently started shooting its second season. The show is very critically acclaimed and is a must-watch for any Martin fan.
