Writer Steve Pink is best known for his collaborations with actor John Cusack on classic contemporary comedies like Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. In fact, almost a decade ago they formed a production company called New Crime Productions with fellow writer D.V. DeVincentis and have been developing successful and funny films like Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity ever since. However now Pink has stepped into the director's chair with his new film Hot Tub Time Machine, also starring Cusack, which opens in theaters on March 26th. We recently had an opportunity to speak with Pink while he was out doing promotion for his new movie. We asked the writer/director about the chances of a long overdue sequel to Grosse Pointe Blank and if there was any film or film franchise in particular that he would like to have a chance to remake or reboot? Here is what he had to say:

Steve, have you and John Cusack ever discussed doing a sequel to "Gross Pointe Blank" or was his film "War Inc.," which was extremely similar in tone and story, sort of the unofficial sequel you think?

Steve Pink: I don't know? I don't know if John looks at War Inc. as a sequel, you'd have to ask John because I didn't do War Inc. but I think that War Inc is definitely a cousin (to Grosse Pointe Blank). It could have been his twin brother in a way. The world that it is in, the similarities are incontrovertible in that way so I think it is but I wouldn't say it's a sequel it's more like "The Silmarillion." Do you know that reference? It's J.J.R. Tolkien's historical ... it's like there's the "Lord Of The Rings," then there's "The Hobbit" and then "The Silmarillion" was a book he wrote, which was massively boring and gives the details of the ancestry of Middle-Earth. It's almost like the compendium of the Middle-Earth. So I would say that it is one version but I would love to do a sequel to Grosse Pointe Blank. We've talked about it.

Have you pitched around any ideas for the film? Would it now take place at their 20-year reunion, perhaps?

Steve Pink: Well that's a good idea. I like that, that's pretty good. I think a sequel would be great. There was talk about it for a long time. I mean I would make a Grosse Pointe Blank 2. I would do that. I'd love that!

Finally, is there any one movie or franchise that you would like to have an opportunity to remake or re-boot?

Steve Pink: I only have a really weird answer, which is Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. John and I co-directed the American stage premiere of the movie. We took an adaptation and worked on it. We revised our own adaptation of it and did the American stage production, which ran in Chicago for a couple of months when we had a theater company together. So I would like that because I love Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp's version but we want to do our own version. So I would love to have a shot at redoing that movie because we really love the Hunter S. Thompson esthetic. So it would be nice. I think there's a Hunter S. Thompson movie in us too. Everyone gives it a shot but I'm convinced that we know how to do it the best. Sorry great actors Johnny Depp, Benicio del Toro and great director Terry Gilliam but I still think we have something to offer in the Hunter S. Thompson cannon of work in bringing it to film, so I'd like to do that.

We will keep you posted on both of these projects as more details develop and Hot Tub Time Machine opens in theaters on March 26th.
