The animated feature Strange World didn't have the strongest showing in theaters with its Thanksgiving weekend premiere. At the end of the weekend, the film is looking at a domestic haul of $18.6 million, a number that's considerably low for a big-budget animated movie from Disney. Deadline reports that with production and marketing costs reaching $274 million for the production, Disney is set to lose nearly $150 million with the film's box office shortcomings.

Reviews for the film are mixed, though they lean on the positive side, pulling in a 74% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes and a 60% audience score. The film has also become the first animated Disney film to be graded with anything below an A at CinemaScore, as it was given a B rating by filmgoers. That's a respectable score, but serving as the lowest on the list of Disney releases is still not exactly a desirable distinction for the movie to have. In his review, our own Julian Roman had some mixed feelings when watching the film, feeling high up on the animation but theorizing that an "obvious attempt at multiculturalism" would result in some criticism against the film from certain viewers.

"The film has humorous moments but pours on the drama," Roman writes. "Strange World will undoubtedly be criticized by conservative audiences that don't share its values. It strikes at the heart of a cultural conflict. Interracial marriage, homosexuality, and disabilities shouldn't be an issue. I view Strange World dispassionately as a moderately entertaining children's film. But recognize that it expresses viewpoints others may find controversial."

Strange World is written by Qui Nguyen (co-writer of Raya and the Last Dragon) and directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6, Tangled). It features the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu. The official trailer for the movie reads:

The feature film introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.

“Inspired by classic adventure stories, Strange World is an original animated adventure/comedy about three generations of the Clade family who overcome their differences while exploring a strange, wondrous and oftentimes hostile world," Hall has said of the film.

Strange World is now playing in movie theaters.
